Where is the 'bake bread' player action?

Post by ivy_saurus »

Hi, I'm an Agricola beginner. In my last game, I at one point had a cooking hearth, and grain in my supply, but could not find any place to use the 'bake bread' action. The rulebook provided says that the 'grain utilization' is ANOTHER place to use that action, so I assumed I'd have it as a special action, but no dice. My only player actions were reorganizing animals and exchanging food, where I'd only get 1 food for my grain. I tried pressing the card, but it just zoomed in and out.

Was this a bug? Am I a bad searcher? Did I misread the rulebook? Or is there something else going on I didn't catch? I'm playing on an iPad, if that makes a difference.

Hi, nah its not a bug. To trigger baking you either have to use the Grain Utilization action space, where you get granted a sow action and a bake action. Otherwise baking get triggered by a good quantity of cards be it Occupations or minor improvements or and that is most typical beside grain utilization, when you build an oven. Either way, there is no free baking conversion

Hi, welcome to Agricola!

This is one of the big differences between eating animals and eating grain. With a fireplace/cooking hearth, you can eat animals at any time. But with grain, you need a specific Bake action to convert grain into large amounts of food. You can always eat crops for 1 food each, but that is very inefficient.

Eating based on crops is normally quite difficult unless you have cards that help you. For example:

Cards that help you plow more fields (Plow Maker, Shifting Cultivation etc)
Cards that incentivise you to take the Grain Seeds action space (Field Watchman, Private Teacher)
Cards that get you regular Bake actions (Baker, Baking Course, Sour Dough)
Cards that help you sow (Sundial, Sower)
Cards that give you some other benefit for having grain fields (Straw Thatched Roof, Bed in the Grain Field, Raised Bed)

For newer players, it's a good idea to try to master "basic" Agricola strategy first, which does not require specific card support and is roughly:

- Build one room to grow into
- Get a fireplace or cooking hearth
- Get some way to hold breeding animals (2 stables, fences, cards)
- Get breeding animals

This is generally a solid and flexible plan. Of course, the beauty of Agricola is there are many, many ways to run different strategies depending on how your hand and the game pans out.
