Can I spend a gold instead of red token I have?

In the rules this is not forbidden, but I was unsure if the implementation allows it, and if so, how do I carry it out. I am trying to keep red tokens away from my opponent.

In the game preferences, set "auto pay even when owning gold" to "disabled".
