Qualifying conditions when time out

Post by Myrdalion »

Hello !

I was playing a Heat championship of 4 races in a tournament in turn-by-turn with 3 players of 6 being qualify each round (I'm not sure I can say which one due to forum policy).
During the first round of the tournament my table was unable to finish in time. Therefore, instead of a points ranking, it was a time ranking. Ok, it's fine, I knew that before subscribing to the tournament.
During the second round one player ran out of time and was eliminated by an other player. I was first in points (I won the two first races) but only fourth in time, so I'm eliminated. Ok, it's not very nice from the other player but it's the rule. The other player was fifth in time so I thought he was also eliminated... And then I realized that this player (the one who is fifth in time and eliminated the player out of time) was not eliminated. And I thought : what  ????

So, I try to understand. You just need to disqualify a player, no matter what points or time left you have, to qualify ? It seems unfair to me (it's the first time I gave a red flag to a player). But perhaps I'm the only one to think this is a problem. So my question is
- Is it a general BGA rule, or it's a specific one with Heat ?
- Am I the only one thinking this rule is unfair ?
- Is there a way to solve this ? I'm probably not the first to complain about this, and perhaps this rule is there because others are worst or not technically available

Sorry for my English (I don't practice very often). I hope that what I sayed is understable. Be nice in the comments : the purpose is to find a better rule (maybe it's not possible, or maybe we are only a few to think it's an issue :D), not to argue or 'name and shame' some players :)

Good play have fun !

I don't actually understand how what you say could happen. I thought it purely goes on time, being the person timing someone out has nothing to do with it I thought.

As for solutions, the problem lies that the rules that lead to this are site wide for all games, but like a number of rules don't really work very well on Heat. Heat is also particularly bad for player's timing other's out or quitting. I wouldn't touch a Championship tournament with a barge pole unless you know all the players in it won't time others out, as it's a waste of time. Even if you know the players a Championship is somewhat risky in the tournament infrastructure as each round has to complete in 30 days, which is a tight turnaround if you do a 4 race Championship with players from a lot of different time zones.

One thing is the people setting up tournaments need to create better settings, there are a number of Heat tournaments that have ridiculous time clocks that are only going to end one way, with lots of people timing out, and it generally being a terrible experience for everyone.

The best solution would require them creating different rules for different games, which it's not clear they're willing to do. As you would just have the player who is timed out or quits eliminated/replaced by a Legend, and the race continues until a result, that would be the best solution by far for Heat, but I'm not sure there's any chance of it happening.

Maybe you can put your table number and question in the suggestions/bug, or also put it over here so people can have a look.

Not for a solution (because this is for all on BGA because of it's framework what Oz is saying), but for another place to maybe understand how the result is determined.

Somehow there is a different result than only timing then.
Which i also tought that was the "tiebreaker" when the game end sooner than the ending period.

Thanks for the answers :)

Here is the table I'm speaking of : https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=537172972&nr

As I understood the rules, the time rankings should have been
1 - stoikymuzhik1107
2 - Rob444
3 - Uglyone
4 - Myrdalion
5 - CrappyDoo
6 - LordMeeple

But instead it was
1 - Rob444
2 - CrappyDoo
3 - stoikymuzhik1107
4 - Uglyone
5 - Myrdalion
6 - LordMeeple

And I don't undestand why. Perhaps it is the time spent on the current race and not the whole championship ?

Anyway, if it's a general setting of BGA which does not work very good with Heat, perhaps the best solution is to choose carefully the tournament to avoid desillusions, as Oz said ;)

That is the best to have the right settings for a championship.
But still i am curious about the answer of the final results. Just to know :)
