Everyone makes mistakes. Pls be kind.

Post by yyyyyuki »

I just realized players are getting more and more aggressive in chat as the rank goes up. In ranks lower than expert, people are more tolerant to each other's mistakes and more patient. However, among masters, there is often someone keeping blaming others for their mistakes all along the game. I think people making mistakes are not on purpose for most of time. No one is perfect. Please be more polite to other players.

I always give red thumbs to those toxic players, even they are actually playing well. It is just because I am not playing for ELO but for fun. I am considering not playing hanabi anymore. The gaming environment makes life more stressful.

I also sometimes come across rude players.
Like you, I will RT the toxic players, or even report them if they become insulting.

On the other hand, I don't care if players play badly, especially if we can talk about what happened.
Sometimes I just missed something ("Sorry guys, brain fart…" ), sometimes they made a mistake. I am not worried about that, but I like to understand.
IMO, refusing to discuss the mistakes at all is quite rude and doesn't help anyone to improve their play.

But I remember that the language and the device can be hard barriers. Some players can't speak a word of English, or are playing on a small mobile phone, so it can be quite a challenge to have a real discussion with them, especially while concentrating on the game at the same time.

The hardest part IMO is the tone in a chat. If the speaker isn't using their native language, it's very difficult to know if they meant to be rude, polite, pedantic, ironic or something else. If this is not the reader's native language either, the understanding might be even harder.
If you feel bad about the way some people are talking (to you or to another player), do not hesitate to tell them "Hey, you seem to be quite pedantic/ironic/…, this is not the best way to make your teammates play better."

Thank you yyyyyuki! I actually restricted access to players with lower ranks because I noticed this as well. It's just a game, no need to be rude :) Some masters even get really annoyed towards players on beginner level and it's so uncomfortable for everyone else. If they don't want to play with beginners, they have the option to not accept the game!
Btw, I would be happy to play with you :)

I am thinking very seriously to stop hanabi cause of players like you.

The ugly truth is, the cooperative games require more than 1 player in order to win. If you don't play to win, then we have different objectives, so no win and no fun. I used to be newbie too. But the most high-rank people I encountered, they were explaining me, and also showed me what to read in order to get better. And they were good to me, cause I was curious to understand the game.
Low elo players, not only they don't understand, they don't ask too.
Therefore they are never getting any better.
Maybe if someone doesn't want to rank up, should only play friendly mode, idk.

In ancient Greek they used to say "το δις εξαμαρτείν ουκ ανδρός σοφού" = the wise man does not make the same mistake twice :)

PS: Everyone does mistakes, and being rude to someone doing mistakes is not wise and not polite. Point is, with low elo players with no interest in the game, i can never discuss mistakes (because they dont care).

An interesting perspective. To you, winning and having fun is the same thing. Consequently, is it safe to say that if someone makes a mistake, they are reducing chance of winning, and so taking away your fun? Perhaps this mindset explains why some people are so hostile towards mistakes.

I suppose there is another group of players who enjoy the game and challenge without necessarily caring about mastering all the conventions and playing 100% perfectly.

That's great and I'm glad you had such a nice experience.

Because all low elo players are exactly the same right? Hypothetically, if I make a mistake and it's met with hostility, aggression, abuse, I wouldn't be keen on asking these players how to improve either. In fact, I wouldn't want to continue the game at all.

I think constructive feedback is important but unfortunately I have witnessed situations like e.g. an expert telling a beginner "All your moves were bad, you shouldn't be playing" even after the beginner apologized for a mistake. In my opinion, this type of behaviour really ruins the game.

Such talking is definitely bad and should be punished.
That's what the report red thumb button is for.

Don't forget that you can filter the tables to not play with the players with a bad karma.

I think it should come down to:

[*] If you are playing with people more experienced with you, be prepared and willing to learn.
[*] If you are playing with people less experienced with you, be prepared for mistakes and be willing to teach.

I agree with blametherogue in that if a player makes mistakes but refuses to listen when people try and explain what should have been done in that situation, or just refuse to interact with chat at all, that is frustrating.
A game is setup with a convention and you should not join a game with a convention set if you either don't know the convention or aren't willing to learn.

I also agree that you can get players who can make a game unpleasant by not being nice.

And worst of all is when you get a mix of both.

Thank you! This is exactly my thought :)

Apologies for my English. All I wanted to say is that in cooperative games the fun is in COoperation. So if someone is not cooperating, there is no fun (forget the word "win"). And by cooperating, I do not mean to play the game my way, just follow the conventions :) otherwise the cooperation is getting pretty difficult, if not impossible. (The conventions exist to make the cooperation easier, or so I think)
