all 2 player games should have best of option

Post by Embe13 »

like cribbage, all the 2 player games have some advantage to the first player. as such more of the 2 player games should have an option of a best of 3,5,7 option. (really id love it if all the games had the option, but for the longer play games it wouldn't work)

There are many 2-player games which...
- Player order advantage doesn't exist or is not significant
- Randomize setup each game
- Use a setup method or an opening rule which nullifies player order advantage

Also, as you said, in long games this simply doesn't work well.

I say yes. Even with games lacking a first/second player advantage this is a great option. As far as either player advantage goes, I even think it might be nice to have a 2-game lead feature. I wouldn't worry too much about game length, just have it be something players can opt into when hosting (with the default being it's off to avoid anyone accidently running into it.) They can sort out for themselves if they have enough time for it.

Anyway, I don't think BGA will adopt this suggestion as a general feature. It's too bothersome and the return is not high.

With 3 games you would have one player starting 2 times and another 1. The other times respectively.

Yeah, this is why I also suggested a 2-game lead option, though even with best of 3 having extra games gives a bit of padding to let players play over a rough game due to first turn advantage.

There's another reason best of x is handy, and that is to kill off extreme cases of bad luck. One player can reliably outplay another, but occasionally drop a game due to bad luck and get a major rating hit. A best of 3 lets that player have that one bad game and still take the match with a win, helping reduce the quantity of absurd upset scenarios.
