PSA: Do not tell in all chat what you hand over in draft!

Post by cranesflyhigh »

This obviously applies in games with 3 players or more. If you say - for example - that you handed over Anti-Gravity Technology to the next player, you are letting the other players know what that player wants in draft. This essentially turns an 1v1v1 (in case of 3p) into a 2v1 in draft, with 2 people working together to deny all the science from the player sitting on the AGT. Such behavior is extremely unsportsmanlike and deserves an instant redthumb. Please do not do it.

I don't know about this. I wouldn't want people to do it to me, 99% of the time I am the hate target anyway, but it's table talk and part of the game. Diplomacy and meta therefor is built in. At the higher level, really anything goes, you do whatever to win within reasons.

For example, you can say things to throw people off their game, but no cussing or insults. If you do reveal things like that in a game you hurting yourself too. Because it will come back to you later. So just prepare for it and don't do it yourself. I don't think a red thumb is needed. Get back at the player by beating him or getting higher rank later.

I get sabotaged, raided, hacked g2 from nowhere all the time, so I had to hate draft them once I climbed higher later in the season. Is it fair? No but it is what it is.

pretty sure this would fall under the category of
"Give some piece of information about the current game situation that disturbs the normal game flow."
which is in the code of conduct

I guess that's why people don't do it and it's looked down on. I actually have yet to experience it on BGA, which is really nice. It's part of the game though, since it's table talk not private chat, so the information is open. And in board game, I think more table talk is better for gaming in general.

I like to chat around the table and in general am a chatty person. But table talk is very different from going out of your way to gang up on someone publicly. There is a massive difference between:
"Uhh, I hate to pass this to you, but I think I have to ':D" or
"Green's game is looking really scary!" and
"I just passed red AGT, don't give them more science."

Different board games vary widely about table talk, being allowed to lie, break deals, etc. It is best to discuss before starting draft if players are willing to allow table talk, but that may not be easy in BGA if players have turned chat off or speak another language.

For some games (like the Pax series, or the upcoming Twilight Imperium), making temporary alliances and targeting players and negotiating is EXTREMELY important and a presumably intended part of the game. It wasn't explicitly intended in Terraforming Mars as far as I know, so different people will have different opinions.

If the rules of the game, and BGA, allow table talk, it seems this is more of a personal 'let's please play this way' request. If there's a rule in place, great (I'd love to know).

This is yet another reason I prefer 2p games, indeed.

Best wishes.

2p TFM is really a beautiful thing. I enjoy more players with close friends, but never play with strangers. This game has a lot of kingmaking / social risk (hate drafting, sabo/raiders, plant hate, conversion spots, award funds) so a disgruntled player or a gang-up can really cause grievance.
