Arena Season 19: Harvest of Champions

Post by DrClick »

Congratulations to all participants and winners from the previous season!

But wait, what exactly is "the Arena?"

The Arena is the competitive mode on BGA. If you master a game and want to play it competitively, this is THE mode to use, so you can challenge the best players and get the most experience points.

The Arena is organized in seasons of 3 months each. Achievements are awarded to the best players at the end of each season.

To play in the Arena: select "Play" and then choose "Arena" instead of "Simple game."

Read more about Arena mode

Arena format and Gurus

In the previous seasons, it was you (more exactly the gurus) who chose the game formats for the Arena: player number, options used, ...

We are very happy to see that this way of doing things contributed to making the Arena more popular: thank you to all gurus for their smart suggestions and their votes!

Rules updates

No Arena rules are changing this season. It does not mean we are 100% satisfied with how the Arena is running, but you seem to appreciate the current rules so we want to keep them as they are for now.

Season 19 is NOW Launched.

The new Arena is now open for its new season.

Some Explanation About: Relegations

At the end of each season, after winners have been awarded, you are relegated.

Some custom relegation rules may have been applied to games for some reason (ex: we decided to update the number of leagues), but in general here is what happens:

  • For games with 6 or 5 different leagues, all players are decreased by 3 leagues.
  • For games with 4 different leagues, all players are decreased by 2 leagues.
  • For games with 2 or 3 different leagues, all players are decreased by 1 league.
  • For all games and all leagues, your number of Arena points is reset to 1, and your AES ("Arena Elo") is reset to 1500.

It's up to you to find the way to the elite!

May the odds be ever in your favor!

You'll find soon below the updated options for each game for this new arena season

Can you please provide more transparency for rewards? Display what top trophies will be awarded based on current player count and how much xp will be rewarded for reaching each level.

And have the xp rewards been reduced AGAIN? Last season I got 1200 for elite in Marian Dice. This season only 400 points for the same. It has over 1100 players when I received it.

Piraten kapern last season I got 1200 for elite and this season was only 600. It has 1800 players when I received it.

Llama two seasons ago I got 1200 for elite with 1396 players, last season I got 600 points for elite with 1329 players and this season was only 400 points with 1269 players when I received it.

I look forward to figuring this out.

The games that give even less I still don't understand. For small player base games many are very hard to reach elite and yet they award only 120 even if they have the same % of people in elite vs total players as popular games. But everyone and their brother can get 1200 for playing can't stop.

#1203: 99 (addition card game) got broken somehow a week before the end of last season and remains unplayable in the arena.

There is some sort of non-existing No preferences (Change) button that has nothing assigned...

I suppose there's a relevant forum for this as well, however posting this here to reiterate the importance:

"Penalise Arena points for inactivity" / "Promote active play throughout the season"

While the whole point of Arena, as I read on the summary page is to bring the actual top player to the spotlight and fight it out, cuz ELOs could be stagnant and not be indicative of true and live calibre. That said, with the current format of Arena people still camp at the top in the first few days/weeks and not play the next few months.

While one could argue that other could climb up too, this argument isn't holding in games where there is a lot of luck involved. Eg: Captain Flip. Playing the last two seasons I see that one could go on a luck spree (ofcourse takes some skills too) and shoot to the top with that momentum, and even more so, fall deeper. In such cases 'camping' if you're lucky enough isn't true to the spirit of the "Arena". So, provide some impetus to the players who do this to keep playing throughout.

TLDR: At the Elite level, if you don't play for a week (or X number of days), you'll start losing arena points, say -10 per day, until you play again in the arena.

Is there a page where I can see my Arena ranking for each of the games I play in Arena mode?

I think I've seen this sort of proposal mentioned occasionally in the past, but so far it doesn't seem convincing to me. Suppose a player plays many games in the first month of the season and then plays no games the final two months, while another player plays no games for the first two months and then plays many games in the final month. If the two players played the exact same number of games with the exact same outcomes, it would seem logical to me for them to have the same resulting competitive score. But under a decay system the second player would have a much higher score despite the exact same performance.

If you did that all that happens is I'll play only the last two weeks of arena instead of only the first two weeks

Why are wins at the end in the spirit of the arena and wins at the start not?

Thurn and Taxis is on a rotation and should have rotated to 3 players.

Why have you locked the option of the expansion Pantheon to be mandatory for everyone? Under these circumstances, I will not participate in the new arena season... I'm totally disappointed.
