BGA licence after steam adaptation ?

Post by Luckyn »

Hi,
I noticed Dire Wolf start to devlop a digital version https://store.steampowered.com/app/2438990/Ark_Nova/
I know BGA games had to get a licence to be available there. So my question is as they develop their own version, can they remove BGA licence when their version is rdy ? Or can they ask to remove part of it like leave only the base game available here ? So if you want to play on advanced mode you have to get their steam version ?
I know some game like Terraforming Mars and Trhough the Ages have a steam version with only base game on BGA

Currently no such restrictions were discussed with Feuerland that even recently gave us the green light for the second Map pack (no ETA though so dont get toi excited), so i would personnally bet the two versions will coexists because the target players base is not exactly the same : steam allows you to reach video games players and will also have bots. The fact that it's not running in the browser will also make possible a more immersive experience with improved display and more. My only concern is about the rules, i really hoped they got them right because i know several board game apps for complex games (agricola, scythe) that had known rules issues and ark nova has a bunch of edge cases

I think if Tisaac can sleep well, with the incredible time and energy he is currently putting into the expansion development (big thank you btw), we can all do the same :D

And if we have reasons to do so: contracts like the Direwolf one don’t happen overnight, and the publisher recently both green lighted expansion and new map pack development knowing that, while informing Direwolf of its BGA plan.

Moreover, remember that online versions have dual purpose: additional revenues but also pushing physical sales. Ark is becoming the center jewel of BGA, partly because it is the game that is played as well in turn base than in live, and there is tremendous exposition here (and a vibrant and expanding community, shout-out to our Discord extraordinaire Propaganda Panda).

Lastly, if you look at history of « just base version » games, they were like that from the start. It is much harder, and risking alienating both users and BGA/devs, to remove stuff afterward than to start with limitations.

So I say let’s continue pilfering happily and may the one with the most determination win.
