Why three screens to log in suddenly?

Post by Pevans »

It was just one screen: fill in details (thanks, password manager) and go to my games.

Now it's three screens, one of which doesn't seem to serve any purpose.

And my password manager can't work out where to insert my user id, so that has to go in manually.

Not an improvement, BGA.

I'm not having this issue with my password manager.

As for why the change was made, they usually don't say why, but you can stay up to date on sitewide changes in this thread: Release Summaries.

I have no idea why either.

Gmail did the same thing years ago, going from 1 fast login screen to 2-3 login screens requiring multiple clicks.

I've never heard justification.

This seemed like a terrible idea at first. Every time I opened my browser I had to re-login and it takes screen after screen. Complete with needing a new fingerprint touch every single screen. I don't know why they couldn't do it on just one screen? The release notes say there was a large amount of "under the hood" stuff added.

Then I realized on one of the later screens there is a place to click to stay online and connected.

Now it is back to normal. When I open my browser, I am still logged in.

My problem with this is that it then looks like I'm online all the time, which I think is potentially annoying for the other players. Not to mention if someone else picks up my tablet and takes a turn!

I don't think that's the case. I never log out (so I never have to log in), and I'm pretty sure I appear as "offline" when I'm not active. Check my profile in a couple of hours...

Indeed, Jellby's profile shows them as offline right now.

There is a difference between logged in and online. You have to be logged in to be online, but you don't have to be online just because you're logged in.

I agree, the new multi-screen login is annoying and serves no clear purpose. Even more annoying, the old login process put me on the page I was trying to go to (generally gameinprogress) once I was logged in, and the new one doesn't.

I don't like eternal login cookies, especially for sites that handle money.

Is there a suggestion/bug report for this? I didn't find one on a casual search, and would prefer not to create a duplicate.
