Luck?

Post by Skrot »

Do you guys agree with the luck factor of 2 for this game? Personally I would rank luck a bit higher (3 or 4) since the luck of the draw is so decisive.

I would also put strategy at 3 or 4 (more about tactics really) and interaction at 4 as well. What do you think?

Yes, 2 is correct. Strategy should be a 5, interaction a 5, IMO. The strategy rating isn't opposed to tactics. It's a more general meaning of strategy that's something like "a lot to think about" or "brain-burning" or "get your butt kicked by good players."

You aren't drawing the cards directly into your hand and they are very expensive when they first appear. If you have enough money to buy them then, well, that's to your credit. And it's not like there's even a clear hierarchy of good and bad cards. It's all about context and how you sue them.

Now, some people think any luck is too much (at least when they lose  ). [edit: not saying you're doing that - you've played a lot. Have you played IRL?]

But for me, if Pax Ren isn't a 5 on both strategy and interaction, well, what modern boardgames are?

The (first) problem is that there is no official definition or guideline of what these terms even mean, at least in the BGA context. You may think "strategy" is anything related to decisions and planning, others could think it's only long-term planning. You may think "interaction" refers to how your actions affect your opponent(s), others apparently think it's more about real-life interaction, let's say diplomacy.

The second problem is that there is no definition or guideline on how to assign the values. 0 is the minimum (some may think 1 is the minimum, another source of variance) and 5 is the maximum, but what distinguishes a 2 from a 3?

The third problem is that these values are assigned by the developer. Some may spend some time thinking about them. Some will just leave it at their default (probably 3). Some will leave everything at 0.

The bottom line is you better ignore these traits.
