In game 608599325, I was tied for the lead. The last place player's time ran down, a full minute negative, and I reluctantly hit expel.

But it expelled me, not the unresponsive player.

I've never seen BGA do that, and I've played over 6000 games. Infuriating.

I looked at the game replay, and you were the one who ran out of time and another player expelled you. It's possible your connection had a problem, and you weren't seeing the live game (this has happened to me before). Unfortunately, by the time you realise, sometimes you have already been booted. There's not a lot you can do, but it looks like you've had the odd expulsion before and earned back your karma - this one is no different, finish a bunch of games, and you'll be back to 100%.

You lost connection. The other player made their move in time, but you were not notified because you had no connection. In your view, the other player was just doing nothing. From everyone else's perspective, it was you who were not reacting, and they booted you.

Whenever you see see the game "stuck" or someone taking a very long time, it's a good idea to reload the page, in case the problem's on your end.

Unfortunately no, the clock keeps going down from the current position even if you disconnect.

This is a BGA-website bug. If I'm disconnected from the server, the window shouldn't just continue counting down the other player's time as if everything is okay. A cursory search did not turn up any formal reports of this bug other the following, which were filed for specific games:

Just happened to me also. someone messaged "play faster" and i responded with "hey [playerxxx] are you still with us", to this there was no response.

chat was working fine, but for some reason it was my clock running down, not the player whose clock was in the red. then they booted me. I was not disconnected and it is most definitely a bug because the player who started the expel process did it precisely when playerxxx went into overtime. it would be an amazing coincidence for my clock to be at zero at precisely the same time as the other players was (if i had been disconnected).

Happened yesterday too. both time in Texas Hold em (took me from 2nd in arena to nowhere)

Same here. As with all things BGA, refreshing is the first step when something is "off," like a player was playing regularly and then suddenly seems to stall.

Agreed. This is definitely a BGA issue and they keep trying to pretend it is us players. My Internet connection is perfectly fine; it almost never has problems but I often have to refresh the screen because of this issue. I have learned by now to do this because otherwise I could also be on the losing end of one of these issues. I hope that our increased fees means that BGA will finally pay some attention to the technology. Yes, I very much appreciate BGA being here and all that it and its volunteers do to keep it going but things like this are frustrating. Especially when no one from BGA will take responsibility for it.

I will add that some games are worse than others and therefore, there may be a game bug involved. For example, Praga Caput Regni - a game I like and play a lot has tons of these refresh / "Updating Move" issues and I have even had times when it has stalled completely, causing me a time violation and even an expulsion. And this is after I have even gone on my phone - using my cellular connection (separate from my home Internet connection) with the same exact problem.

Again, an acknowledgement of responsibility and the dropping of our karma violations would go a long way towards decreasing frustration. Fixing the platform / game issues would be an even bigger plus.
