Character tier list

Post by dethwing »

My current ranking.. Sometimes it depends on what your farm tiles are, but mostly I would never pick a lower tier option over a higher

Tier 1: Fox and Woodpecker.

Tier 2: Frog and Badger (Badger is harder to play well. For a newer player, taking deer or bunny over Badger is not a bad choice).

Tier 3: Bunny and Deer

Incidentally, Bunny gets worse with more players and Deer gets better. More likely to see good tiles.

Tier 4: Beaver and Pig.

Beaver is probably better, but it always feels like a trap to me.

What are your thoughts?

I'm surprised to see you rank the fox so highly! Definitely strong but I think it's similar to the badger in that it is a difficult one to use well. I think I would put Leland The Frog up at Tier 1 personally, he's been my most consistent performing character. Starting with a huge bucket just opens up pushing into blueberries or pumpkins so early.

Remi is my swingiest character personally. I tend to pick her if given the chance, I've had some of my highest scoring games with her but also some big misses if the sunrise tile draw is poor. Although I will agree that she's got a slightly better chance of performing well with more players.

I think you're undervaluing the Beaver, but he is fairly dependant on the buildings that come out, so he may similarly have a better consistency in higher player count games. If you can line up a lot of end game points scoring buildings and just grab like 2 bushes to tend over and over, he can score HUGE.

Fox, like badger, is very skill intensive compared to the other top 3. Wood pecker is easier to play, but doesn't have the ceiling the fox does. Frog is strong sure, but I think strictly worse than wood pecker. 3 actions up front, vs 4 over the course of the game.

I recently learned that badger triggers every action rather then once per round. I thought you got at most 4 per game and if you didn't do it round 1 it was wasted. I was wrong! It's waaaay better then I thought and I think probably tier 1 now.

I agree I undervalued beaver. Like deer, he is very dependent on what comes out. Pay attention to the available buildings turn 1 if you're considering him. Look for bucket/clear in particular when deciding. Pig is clearly under powered and is definitely dead last.

Even in a 4p game if I was choosing pig vs bunny, I'd probably sigh and take bunny.

I think my updated 2p list would go:

1. Fox and Badger (If you're experienced. Otherwise take either of tier 2 above them.)

2. Pecker and Frog.

3. Beaver, Bunny, Deer.

Never pick: Pig

Edit: Just now realized I was talking to one of the designers of the game.....
