Whats the point writing a personal comment?

Where are they visible?
They are at last not seen before a game is starting or when you consider to play or not, in single game.
So what's the point?
It is of course right before a new game you have use for the comment!

The comments are visible in the player's profile. A possible use is to write down the reason (and maybe date) why you red-thumb a player, or how many "strikes" the player has, so next time you can see if it's the nth one and red-thumb.

If an opponent has a particular playing style then I may make a note of it. Not necessarily for backgammon, but with some games some players play fast and aggressive (thinking push your luck games) that’s useful to note.

I understand the value of notes, but if you don't have a chance to see them before you say yes or no to an opponent (in single game) it is less meaningful.

Another thing I wonder - How to see which level an opponent in Arena is playing on. Only sometimes there is a second or two before the game - and can't find it in the profile

The opponent's level is shown on the pre-game 'you're about to play vs...' screen for real-time games, isn't it?

Also, clicking on the cloud icon in the top left of the game-playing page will take you to the game-summary page, which will display the players' Arena Status.

I'm guessing you're playing in Arena mode?
Arena hides your opponents before game start to make cheating more difficult. And to keep matchmaking fair and random.

But if you're playing in normal mode you can always see you're opponents before accepting a match, even before joining the table. So the notes can be useful to avoid or seek out certain players.

Even in Arena though. You might just use the notes to mark players you've had memorable interactions with. So you remember them when you match again.
