Time Left

Post by Huggable T »

Am new to this site and I am playing a tournament game. One player is in US and another player is in Australia. I am in UK.

I started out with a lot of hours but although I log in every day I only have 6 hours and 5 mins left compared to the other players 28 hours.

Can somebody please explain to me what I have done wrong to merit such a small amount of time left as I do not know how that can be right??

Thank you

When asking questions about a specific game/tournament, it really helps people trying to answer your question if you provide a link the the tournament in question.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Cartographers tournament. This tournament has the following settings:
Game speed
Turn-based • Fixed time limit
Time allotted to each player
40h00
Playing hours
24 hours a day (no playing hours)
One thing that sometimes surprises players used to regular and Arena turn-based games is that there is no increment in tournaments. Meaning no time is added back on your clock on your next turn. And because you are in a tournament without a playing hours window set, your clock will run at any time of the day when it's your turn.

There is a decent chance your opponents are often making their moves while you are asleep, but I haven't checked the game log in detail.

To avoid, or at least mitigate, this problem, closely scrutinize the time settings for a tournament. Consider only playing in tournaments with playing hours set that overlap your waking hours. Playing hours are a 12-hour window in which your clock will run during your turn. You can make moves outside of that window, but your clock will never run outside that window.

For example, if you go to bed at 11 pm and wake up at 7 am, if you enter a tournament with playing hours of 11:00->23:00, the clock will stop running at 11 pm your time, and won't resume until 11 am, even if your opponent makes a move at 1 am your time. In your current tournament, the clock would start running if your turn comes up at 1 am.

Alternatively, if there are no playing hours, then make sure there is a loooooooot of "time allotted to each player." The problem is the tournament administrator needs experience to know what settings work, and sometimes they choose aggressive time frames without being sure they make sense for that game.

Ed.: As of this edit, it is past 12:30 am in the UK and it is your Aussie opponent's turn. If they make a move soon, you may run out of time before you wake up. Yes, that assumes certain details about your sleep schedule, but you have to sleep eventually, and this issue will arise when you do.

Thank you so much for this info - I am new to this site (Joined in December) and was wondering why I was accumulating time penalties - U have kindly clarified this for me and I shall be wary of this going forward - its now 01:22 in the UK (well past my bedtime) and both opponents are on so fingers crossed I will get to the end. Have coffee and matchsticks!! Appreciated the prompt reply too - have a lovely day

Good luck. These things are not well documented where they should be, i.e., in the site-wide FAQ. There is a Tournaments FAQ at the top of the Tournaments sub-forum, but even it is incomplete.
