How Does Rank Work?

Post by ntlwhlr »

Just curious how getting ranked works vs. not ranked and how it works. I am newer so not a ton of games under my belt. For me it shows as Not Ranked after my ELO score. One game for a while I was ranked and it said 84th. Then I lost a few times and it has gone to not ranked. How does this ranking work? I couldn't seem to find anything in the FAQ or anything?

Thanks in advance.

A rank is only shown if you are in the top 100. If you go to the game's page, you can look at the entire ranking list. As default, the ranking shown in the "Ranking" box on the game's page is the ranking of the current Arena season but in the section's top right corner you can change from "current season" to "all-time" to see the Elo ranking. Unfortunately, you cannot select to see more than 10 at a time.

Each game will have its own ELO range for what’s in the Top 100 players. Games with more skill typically see a wider range of ELO (such as Azul), games with a balance of skill/luck in a mid range (such as Backgammon) and games with more luck are lower range (such as Martian Dice).

Another factor is the size of the player base. Games with a big base, such as Azul, will create a wider distribution of ELO and also it’s more likely to find over 100 exceptionally strong players in a bigger pool.

Three games I play a lot have the following range of ELOs (as of this post) for their top 100 players:

Azul 1062 (1st) to 685 (100th)
Backgammon 534 (1st) to 349 (100th)
Martian Dice 356 (1st) to 253 (100th)

These take less than 15 seconds to look up on each game’s page. You can also see your own ELO position and rank.

Gotcha - Thank you for the information! I wasn't sure if it was tied to the ELO was something separate. Have a great day all!
