Penalty for game non starter

Post by _Samlight_ »

Hello,

Is it possible to add a Karma penaty for people not starting games after a certain period of time? Sometimes games are not starting because one of the player does not accept to start the game.

One thing that will make games start faster would be that after 15 seconds if a player is not starting the game then the game is cancelled but the player(s) who fail to accept the game would received a Karma penalty of 5% and if they repeat this action the penatly will be increased to 10%.

15 seconds might be a agressive you can be make it 30 seconds but some sort of Karma penatly should be implemented.

This 100%. It is fairly standard to have something like 20 seconds to accept a game and receive a penalty if not. It is frustrating that this happens at the start of almost every game as it's such a time waster, especially with lesser popular games.

Please no. A couple of seconds or minutes is not worth getting or giving someone a penalty.

Power outage again User "Exotic Dreams"? -> https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=40988
... some people dont understand, but penalties are necessary otherwise everybody just leaves a game before they lose, and since they never lose they gain high places in rankings. especially in arena league games. you want to play casually? play normal mode without penalties.

player booted me from my game. Didn't help that the power outage happened on my turn.

Don't assume everyone quits.

I'd like the opposite - to add additional confirmation that the player is present before starting an arena game.
It sometimes happens that I am paired against someone who is no longer present, the game starts and I have to wait for the time allowance to run out.
There could be additional dialog along the lines of "we got an opponent for you, are you ready to play?" yes -> start the game. timeout in 15s or so -> return to the lobby and no longer seek for opponents until manually turned on again (with no penalty)

Life happens! I play with a group of people, and sometimes, we're unable to start/continue due to someone having something happening. It's unfair to them to get a penalty if something happens.
If it's the start of the game, sometimes someone else joins and we need to reset it to get our player in. If it's the middle of the game, sometimes they fall asleep, someone they're with in person does/says something and they're distracted, sometimes they don't understand and need to look up rules, they need to use the restroom or get food, or any number of other situations that would make it unfair to make them lose points.

If they're just trying to get a higher score, that's not cool and I understand wanting a penalty... But how does one confirm whether that's happening, or something like the above occurs? We can't even trust that they won't say they weren't doing something for a better score, too. There's no easy way to prevent this.

I think it would be way better to give the karma points to someone who waits x-amount of time for the game to continue instead. Reward patience, do not penalize having a life.

Or only penalize if they end after the game is more than half over and that person goes missing for more than a day, then whomever disappeared without responding after a day or more gets penalized, and the person who didn't forfeit/disappear gets rewarded. I played a Yahtzee mobile game before that would give people up to 3 days to respond to a play, understanding that life happens, but also that people don't want to wait forever... I used to play multiple people... There were times when life messed me up and I lost out on wins/points because I was in the hospital or life was chaotic.... But otherwise, I played my games through and so did most people... I also had multiple rounds with people open, sometimes I had several games up with the same person. BGA seems to allow multiple games to be played, so it would be best to have some kind of respectable-of-all-scenarios honor system up.

Thats why there are two modes: "Normal Mode" and "Arena Mode":
Thats how it should be:

Normal mode: do whatever you want, nobody cares.

Arena mode: we are here to play, if you cant anticipate 30min of your life and commit to play this game without distraction, then dont play!

Its not that hard to understand.
