I'm not sure if this has always been happening or if I just finally figured out the strategy? I'm noticing people setting up a table with random teams and then once 2 people join, they change how teams are chosen to By table order (1st/2nd versus 3rd/4th) or By table order (1st/3rd versus 2nd/4th) depending on who the table creator wants as their teammate. I just leave the table when it happens, but it doesn't seem fair because not everyone realizes what is happening.

I hadn't noticed; I am glad you pointed it out.
Spades is such a toxic game anyway, so this should not surprise me. Spades is the one game on here that I've played where the chat just turns outright nasty and vicious.

This has been raised numerous times for years.
Imo manual team member order must be limited to friendly mode in all team games.

So, who can make this happen?
To be clear, I interpreted your answer as saying that all non-friendly rated spades games should always be random partners, right?

The developer in charge. However, this game is currently not actively maintained.
It should be, but many team games on BGA, including Spades, didn't consider this aspect at all.FrankJones wrote: ↑26 March 2025, 05:35 To be clear, I interpreted your answer as saying that all non-friendly rated spades games should always be random partners, right?

The continuous pairing with someone in ranked games itself is an unfair advantage against other randomly matched players.
Thus, a significant number of players are constantly moderated in team games without this limitation (Tichu, Spades, and etc.).

Just to further clarify - if people think they are playing against random opponents but in fact are playing against a pair who regularly play together, that isn't really a fair game.
If there were two separate rooms - one for random matchups, and one for regular pairs to play as teammates (such as in Bridge), that would be different.

exactly. For a while I kept thinking 'why is the computer always matching me with the lowest ranked person?' Now I know to pay attention, but others don't know.FrankJones wrote: ↑26 March 2025, 14:45

Everyone has the ability to find friends within the community and invite them to games.ufm wrote: ↑26 March 2025, 13:55The continuous pairing with someone in ranked games itself is an unfair advantage against other randomly matched players.

I find it way more unfair for higher ranked players to lose a bunch of elo for losing with a 100elo player and gain little for winning with that player.
When I create a game I do all my settings and invite my partner prior to making my table public. So there is no surprise. I've had this happen at other games not at spades because I usually set my own table. What would solve this is if settings couldnt be changed once a player joins. This is how it is done for turn based games. You click accept when a real time game launches so maybe that is the reasoning but most ppl probably don't check the settings and just click accept when the game is launched.FrankJones wrote: ↑26 March 2025, 14:45Just to further clarify - if people think they are playing against random opponents but in fact are playing against a pair who regularly play together, that isn't really a fair game.
