Parks is basically a different game now

Post by UltraNeil »

Parks 2nd edition is sufficiently different it should really be a Parks 2 imo and a separate game offering. I have the original Parks and was disappointed that I can't play it online. I'm not saying the 2nd edition isn't good, but it's not the same game!

I feel the same way . . . and . . . after waiting with anticipation for the re-release . . . gradually discovering it was a different game . . . I am disappointed . I tried to like it . . . watched several games in progress . . . the new version of the game does not interest me.
I don't own a copy of PARKS . . . but I did buy it (plus Nightfall) as a Christmas gift for daughter and son-in-law a few years back. I'll be able to play it with them. Also . . . my local board game cafe has it in their library . . . I can play PARKS there.

Parks 2 would have been a good name for it. It's a remake of the original game, but it's not the same game.

I should point out that even if they used a new name, the original game still would not be available online.

other than the last player on the path change, I fail to see what the big difference, mechanically, is between 1st and 2nd edition?

canteens are twice as usefull?

You can visit unlimited parks on the same to.

(And, no, we do not need another false bug report on this. That's how it works now.)

Oh, fair points. Didn't realize that wasn't the case in the first one. That is a bit of a big change.

Other than the developer wanting to get eyes on the new version, I don't really understand the reason to take the original version off of BGA entirely.

If you're going to completely mess with the rule set and layout, why not take a middle ground approach and allow tables to pick options that could bring dynamic rules from the old version up into the new UI?

Three seasons as opposed to four is a big bummer. The static game board is a bummer. The lack of camera feels like an unnecessary change but whatever.

Especially while the new version is in beta, why not just keep both active to allow us to explore the dynamics and submit feedback collectively?

Just bummed out. I sincerely love the original game and am open to changes and new developments, but being so rigid about it without optionality feels like a slap in the face for long time players. And I own the game IRL plus expansion, so it's not like I haven't financially supported the project! I've also persuaded multiple others to buy it! But at this point the second version feels like more of a money grab than an actual worthwhile second edition, wherein they switched up random rules just for the sake of change.

the gameboard isnt strictly static, the order is shuffled every season (except for PARKS being dead center). the fact that the length of the trail is alyways 9 spaces for each season (as opposed to the 5-6-7-8 of the old version, 3 seasons keeps the game length about the same.

the publisher of the game lost the lisencing rights to the card artwork, which is what started the whole 2nd edition thing.

This has been well-documented here; the publisher lost rights to the art used in the original edition, as Suoivax mentions.
