Several times I have encountered "Beginners" who have no interest in learning the rules of this game and how to play it. No, they are just thinking they are going to ride on your coat tails as you take them to a victory for a +5 gift box. This can be infuriating, as they think they can just point and click their way to a gift box. That doesn't work in this coop game where every player has to do their part to pull out a victory (no single player can win this game on their own without other players knowing the rules and doing their part).
One of the sure signs you have encountered this phenomena is that the "Beginner" (sometimes "Apprentice") player does absolutely nothing on their player turn other than drawing a card and discarding a card. If you see that happening, you know you have a "gift box scammer" on your hands.
The first couple of times I encountered this, I rage quit on them. But that is NOT the thing to do. Because that actually gives them a "victory" and a gift box.
The thing to do when you encounter this on this game, after the player has shown no willingness to learn the rules, read your tips in chat, etc. is to immediately start playing like they are. That is, you just "hang it up" and start only drawing a card and discarding a card on your player turns. The monster at hand will kill you in no time. And the "gift box scammer" will not get a "victory" and will not get a gift box.
And the thing about this coop game that makes that the solution to these non-player scammers is that you don't lose any ELO in this game for a loss (you only gain ELO for a victory).
I imagine this strategy would apply to any cooperative game where you encounter one of these scammers.
