I'm from Maryland in the US. My mom and I have been playing with friends who live on the other side of Patuxent River from us in a meetup group for almost five years now. I think it was around mid-March when the two of us first joined in.
We've changed locations some, from a friend's apartment space to a vacant room in a community college (and sometimes at another friend's house) to Big Larry's Comic Book Cafe in the Lexington Park area. Then owner of the place kicked us out based on something petty, and his business on boardgaming lessened in success (long story). For a little while, we were hurting on gaming at a public and very open location for any new gamers to join us while we were getting together at this spacious yet private room that is not used a whole lot for Toys for Tots stuff. We love new people, and we're a hilarious and laid back group.
Our latest permanent place to meetup is a gamestore in St. Mary's County called High Tide Games. Every Friday night, most of us bring our boardgames (quite a variety) with us. There's always a wide selection to choose from. We've been there for a year now, and the owner there is so much more awesome than the other guy ever was.
Ever since I've been part of this group for so long, I've got to try out so many different games! If it weren't for this group, I never would have gotten into Euro games and the many others apart from the respective classic games; Caracassone, Zombie Dice, Five Crowns, Puerto Rico, Takenoko, Robo Rally, Spinners Dominoes, Fluxx, Ticket to Ride, Allhambra, and so on!
My newest favorite is Gravwell: Escape from the 9th Dimension. It is an odd yet very cool 2 to 4 player game that determines how you move depending on whether or not there are more spaceships ahead of you or behind you, as well as what fuel, repulsion, or tractor beam cards you have in your hand. In the game premise, the players' spaceships are stuck in this black hole, and there's hardly any gravity at all. The first person at least closest to the warp gate at the end of the pathway by the end of the 6th round wins.
I've discovered this site today and very soon I'm looking forward to seeing how Takenoko plays online. That game is so adorable looking, and fun. I also notice this site has Puerto Rico, Quorridor, and Jaipur. I like all of those. I played the actual Jaipur card game only once as I write this post. The friend of mine who owns a copy of Jaipur is someone I don't see as much anymore, so it's good to know it can be played at BGA!
