Change Arena Format: Add End of Season Tournament

Post by JackT »

It feels like the current Arena format has become stale and prone to ELO manipulation.

Issues:
1. Avoidance of Competitive Matches – Top players often avoid each other to preserve ELO, preferring easier matchups against lower-ranked players.
2. Queue Manipulation – Some players game the system to match with preferred opponents.
3. Late-Season Stagnation – Players sitting at #1 near the end often stop playing entirely to avoid risk.
4. Stressful Final Days – The final push becomes more about timing and luck than actual skill.

Proposal: Create an End of Season Tournament
After 80 days, the top 8 ELO players qualify for a final round-robin or bracketed tournament.
1. Award #1: Highest ELO at end of the regular season.
2. Award #2: Tournament Champion.

Benefits:
1. Reduces Queue Manipulation – Players only need to stay in the top 8, not preserve perfection.
2. More Activity from Top Players – Less fear of losing encourages them to keep playing and refining strategy.
3. Decreased End of Season Stress – Focus shifts from hoarding ELO to preparing for the tournament.
4. Better Spectator Experience – Others can watch the best players face off directly.
5. Skill-Based Finish – The final champion earns it by competing head-to-head with other top players.

This format won’t suit every Arena, but could be an optional alternative for competitive modes that want a more engaging and fair conclusion.

I had the same idea but discarded it. As many advantages as it have, it's just too much effort for every one.

If you want a fair tournament it needs to be at least best of five. That would mean quite a lot of time depending on the games, and it can't be realtime because people don't share timezone.
- some people dont like turn-based.
- playing up to 15 games will be quite time consumming.
- what would prevent people to get help from someone else ?

Interesting idea but i dont think it would do well in reality.

Turn-based tournaments seem to take a long time to run. This format would obviously have less rounds (so wouldn't drag on for months), but I don't think you'd get it completed in 10 days, especially if you're doing a bracketed tournament. If you're talking Top 8, I assume you're thinking 2p games? But not all Arenas play 2p, depends on the season, and depending on the game 2p can be wildly different to 3/4p (which can also be wildly different to each other).

I dunno, I guess there's possibilities and everyone has their own opinion, but personally I wouldn't be interested at all (although in fairness, I'd probably never make the final tournament in anything either). I am occasionally interested in Arena, but like others on here, I probably find it interesting as a more reliable player pool, and then just see how far up the rankings I can climb (talking which league I end in, not top places, because I think my gameplay is too diverse to ever be expert in anything).

Maybe a spin on your idea, that is slightly more realistic to implement. Once a year have a "champions league" tournament (probably turn-based). Last four arenas' top 4 (or other number depending on the game) get the qualification spots for the tournament. If any qualified player qualifies for a second time or declines the spot it goes further down the order.
So you don't really need anything from BGA to do it and it can be done on a per game basis.

The avoiding players etc. can be solved by stopping red thumbs in Arena, but there is a problem with doing it. That being until they give a better solution for quitters at all games doing so is untenable imo. I used to have to red thumb a lot of players for just blatantly quitting when they knew they'd lost at the end of Arena games, playing these players is completely tedious, as not only is it a complete waste of time (it voids the game if it's more than 2 players), it also disproportionately affects honest players, as if I will never quit a game, it means all my losses go on record, but I was losing truckloads of certain wins to players quitting on the last turn voiding the game. My main game, Heat, has actually since solved this problem, likely because the issue was so bad at Heat, by making games play to completion regardless if someone quits or not, but until a similar solution is implemented for more games, I don't think you can implement this.

I don't really see how you end of season final 8 solves your issues. The top players still have no incentive to play if they have top 8 locked up. One of the problems actually here is how general ELO works, or more importantly the reducer, if you are a top high volume player, you get heavily punished to keep playing the same competition over and over, so you basically have to take a break from Arena.

I don't see how this makes it a skill-based finish at all, this makes it a luck-based finish unless the game is virtually pure skill, which is very few games, if the Arena winner essentially comes down to 1 game at the end of the season, luck in that 1 game will be a big factor in determining the winner, rather than the long run of the current Arena format.

If all you care about is the competition, you can set up the tournaments yourself, that's what I do, you can create your own settings then for the best experience, and not have any time pressure for when it needs to be completed by. Because that's actually another issue here, is not all games Arena settings are the best game experience, sure this is totally subjective, but other factors are being taken into account when voting for Arena season. For example the majority of Heat players will tell you Heat is best at 5-6 players, but Arena is 4 players, because it's like a compromise hybrid, where if it was set to 5 or 6 players it would simply take too long to find real-time Arena games. I suspect for many games this is a factor in why 2 player tends to be very popular too. In a tournament you don't have that problem though, you can set the actual best settings as you see fit.
