Was there anything I could have done here?

Post by ComplexMuffin »

This post is targeted at the top players to get their opinions on this game. I played a friendly with my friend and I ended up conceding in just a few turns. It felt like him going first, getting good events, and getting good techs just won him the game handily with nothing that I could have done. He was going to get his T4 tech in two turns and dominate the map as a result of it and we both agreed that I had no counter play.

I was just wondering if some of the expert players here would have tried to counter him in a different way or if they disagree that the position was unwinnable, or pointing out mistakes that I made, etc.

Thank you in advance!

Don't consider myself an expert, but here are mMy thoughts...

This seemed like a pretty closely run game in my opinion. First person to the L4 tech does not necessarily win the game. And you each controlled only a single system at this point. I would definitely not have conceded the game in this position.

I noticed that both of you stuck with just the center of the tech track. If it became obvious that he was going to get to L4 first, you could have pivoted and started launching into a neighboring tech tree... then you would be a turn or two ahead there. You could have started building a plan towards getting some of the secondary achievements (Warlord or Technologist). On your first Tech 2 research you picked Human Experiments over Spacetime Anomaly Studies... I think I would have chosen the other way.

What I like about BTS is that it does give you many paths to victory. If I feel like I am in a position of constantly reacting to another players moves, then I try to think of ways where I can flip the script and start getting him to react to my moves. Controlling the pace and initiative of moves is an important part.
