One of the sources of imbalance in a 4 player asymmetric game is the fact that if one player is the PanAfrican Union then another player is unopposed in either going for gold cards or exploration. It is a very good chance (like over 70%) that the unopposed player wins simply because nobody is going for their cards. Without the PanAfrican Union, the game is more balanced as you have 2 financier players (Noram States and Asian Federation) vs 2 explerers (Aztec Empire vs Republic of Europe).
I oftnen offer the no PAU option as a house rule with experienced players in a 4 player game, as the PanAfrican Union contributes to imbalance in a 4 player game.
I think the option to remove this faction in a 4 player asymmetric game would be really nice. It would open up more balanced possibilities for tournament play.
