Elo of Arena opponents

Hi All,

My Elo is in the low 500s for Orleans and I'm trying to grind my way up to the high 500s by playing Arena games.

I had reluctantly come to accept that it was going to be slow going, because my Elo gains from recent Arena games were:

505 > 508 > 511 > 514 > 518 > 522 > 525 > 527 (so an average of ~3 over the last 7 games)

So imagine my delight when I saw another player race past me with a run of:

524 > 531 > 538 > 547 (so an average of 8 over the last 3 games)

Now I understand how Elo calcs work, and that player has indeed been playing against 400ish opponents (including the same one twice) and I haven't. But is that just good luck on his part and bad luck on mine? Or is there a setting somewhere I'm not aware of? (I'm aware of the setting to restrict to opponents of certain Arena tiers, but not Elo levels in Arena)

Most likely it's just been luck of the draw.

On average, people who have achieved Elite are most likely to have higher elo, so that could be part of it. It's early in the season though, so the range is probably greater.

If your aim is to climb the elo ranks though, are you sure Arena is how you want to do it? Given you can filter casual games by level, you can ensure you're playing the people who have similar elos to you, rather than trusting the Arena player lottery.

Probably not the best way, as katmk said. Play in normal mode and you can choose your opponents' levels (how easy it would be to find them, that's a different matter).

It could be because that other player plays at different times, or real-time instead of turn-based (or vice-versa)...

Note that winning two consecutive games against the same player is actually detrimental (compared with winning against two separate players of the same ranking).
