Yesterday,a tournmament game [of Saint Petersburg] I was playing in got stopped just before the last turn through running out of time. All of the players were playing actively, they just weren't quite fast enough. So I'm thinking, why not continue games that are,say,70% complete outside of the tournament, instead of cancelling them ?
The main objection might be that players may not want to play extra games. But they'd only be playing a maximum 30% of a game, and the only players doing that would be the ones who progressed, who would be the ones who were fastest and had most time left.
What do people think of this suggestion ? I don't think it should apply in tournaments where people play multiple games simultaneously,if any of those still exist.

For one thing, tournament creators have the option of specifying no booting in their tournaments now.
But (and I say this as someone who's also been booted from a tournament game close to the end), if you start shifting the goal posts for where the limits of things are, you'll continue to get people who want the goal posts shifted for them. My game was at 68%, why couldn't it have continued since it would have if it'd only progressed through one more turn?? MY game was at 64%, it's only 4% off the (new) limit, why couldn't we just have the option to finish? There is a reason to set time limits in tournaments, and once they're set, that should really be it. The thing is, for many tournaments, I assume the time limit's point is more about constricting a game to a set amount of time so the tournament doesn't last forever, not as much in making sure players use the same amount of time (especially in a tournament with 24 hour play times). In which case, the tournament should be setup with the no booting option on, and let games run to their maximum set time, regardless of who uses that time (in the case the game isn't completed, the player who used the least time will win, which isn't always fair either, but is better than rankings done when someone is booted and multiple players need eliminating). But if booting is an option, then you need to accept that risk when you enter - if your draw means you're poorly placed for timing, then so be it. Hopefully your opponents aren't jerks. But at the end of the day, it's just a tournament.
Round robin tournaments typically all run with simultaneously played games. There's apparently a way to configure them staggered, but it sounds like it's a loophole that isn't that easy to trigger.

Sorry,I hadn't made myself clear. The games would still be decided on most-time-remaining for tournament purposes. They'd have to be decided somehow for the tournament to progress on-time.What I'm suggesting is that games which were at least 70% complete would continue outside of the tournament, and score for ELO purposes on completion.
