Problème récurrent avec l’horloge en tournoi - Recurring issue with tournament clock

Post by Nelfah »

🇫🇷 Français

Bonjour,

Hello,

I regularly encounter issues with the tournament clock (turn-based).
For example, yesterday evening in an Odin tournament, I still had about 13 hours left to play my move. This morning, when I logged back in, the clock showed –47 hours. https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=714335202

This problem doesn’t seem to be limited to Odin, as I’ve already noticed it in other tournaments as well. In addition, it’s impossible to report the bug through the usual interface.

Is this a known issue, and is there any fix or solution planned?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Your time is currently showing as -4h32min, which seems roughly correct according to the fact that 8 days have elapsed since it started and you each started with 5 days of time on your clock. I'm not sure why you'd be seeing a different clock, but it's not a problem with the table since it looks normal to me.

If something like this happens, be sure to get a screen cap and include it on the forums and/or in your bug report. The only thing that occurs to me is, maybe the clock said -0h47 and OP interpreted that as -47 hours.

If I remember correctly, the display when it's less than 1hr is just -47:55 or whatever, which I guess is still interpretable as 47 hours, but usually given away that it isn't by the fact that the seconds are ticking up in real-time.

Hi Nelfah.

I've just posted a topic about this.

I think that - like me - you hadn't realised that the timer in a tournament game works differently to a 'normal' game in that it doesn't reset with each turn. Therefore, if you have 8 hours left on your clock and go to sleep when it's your turn, you will likely be out of time when you wake up and log back in.

Seems a bit of an unfair system, especially if you're playing people on the other side of the world.

If time got added back on and the game kept going as long as no one ran out of time, there would be no way to specify the length of each round of a tournament. All tournaments have a maximum time for each round. If the game doesn't finish before then, it awards places based on how much time is left on your clock.

If a tournament has playing hours, don't enter a tournament that has playing hours while you are sleeping. If the tournament doesn't have playing hours, then only enter tournaments with rounds long enough that you can afford lose 8 hours now and then. If you're unsure if there is enough time, then only enter tournaments with playing hours set.

This seems a bit like saying, "don't enter tournaments"

I'm not suggesting that the thinking time resets (although I don't think this is as impossible in a tournament as you suggest) but to decided the outcome of a game based on thinking time is crazy when it's kind of outside of your control.

The current system actually allows someone who's losing (but who has time remaining) to get the win by getting the game go over.

I'm not saying don't enter tournament. I enter tournaments. But I enter tournaments considering all these factors.

It is infeasible as tournaments are currently structured. You could have tournaments that don't have fixed round lengths and just keep going and going until every single game finishes no matter how long that takes as long as no one runs out of time. But it would make it impossible for a player entering the tournament to know what they are committing to. If I'm going on holiday in 6 weeks, and I see a Swiss tournament that is 5 rounds long with a maximum round length of one week, under the current system I know with 100% certainty that if the tournament begins today the tournament will conclude before my holiday begins.

That is correct. If you can think of a better way to resolve this that works within the current structure of tournaments, feel free to propose it in the bugs/suggestions database.

If your proposal is simply to have open ended tournament timelines that go on indefinitely until a winner is determined for each game, you can propose that as well.

My point was that, if you have to look for a tournament that has specific playing hours and specific turn times etc, you're unlikely to find many that suit.

Also, as tournaments have a 'maximum game length', thinking time resting would not make the game go on indefinitely as you suggest. The thinking time could be the same as a normal (non tournament) game but the game still ends if the total game length is reached. That's what happens now - the game ends due to the limit being reached rather than the individual players' remaining thinking time.

To be honest, even if they just changed the winning condition where games run over to whoever is in the lead, it would be (slightly) fairer than the current situation.

If you want to keep the maximum round length, but keep adding time back to the clock, you're just making it easier to avoid being expelled for running out of time, but you still haven't resolved the issue of how to decide who wins if the game doesn't finish before the maximum time is reached.

Some games don't even have scores. So how would you decide who is in the "lead"? For other games, a person could have the most points, but no way to score more and no way to stop the others from passing them were the game to play to completion. That person would have an incentive to stall the game until the round reaches the maximum time, the same as a person losing under the current system but with more time on their clock has an incentive to stall the game until the round reaches the maximum time.

And if your answer is just to make the devs decide on a game-by-game basis how to assign a winner in an incomplete game that their code is not designed to resolve, well they may have something to say about that. The current system is flawed, but at least it is uniformly applied across all games.
