tied first place knock-out tournament

I recently participated in a knockout tournament that had a 1v1 format winner advances.
Me and my opponent finished both in first place, but he did advance and I got eliminated.
I wonder what the way is to determine the player that advances in this type of scenario's?

Had that happen many times. Hope for a good flip. They flip a coin to see who advances. Take it in stride. You will win some. Lose some.
