Unable to give thumb on player who didn't start game

Post by Jest Phulin »

Does anyone know why I shouldn't be able to give a thumb (red or green) to a person who didn't play a move in a game?

I was on a 2-player turn-based table, 1 turn per day. The person never made a move. When their thinking time expired (note - this is at least 24 hours after they agreed to play to the end), I expelled them. I was unable to give them a thumb, with the error message that I had not played a game recently with them. While technically true that I did not play with them, I had agreed to play with them, and them with me.

Is this unique to turn-based mode, or is it for any game where the last play (including "I agree to play) is more than the 'recent' time period?

Yes I have had the same experience. There needs to be some better method of dealing with these time wasters. I am currently playing a 6 player Libertalia and we have a player who has not responded for best part of a week. This is unacceptable. I think there has now to be a mandatory time limit for turn based games. Unlimited just is to open to abuse,

It does recommend you don't use the unlimited. I'm finding out the hard way that I should have paid attention to that. I took one and the admin is first on turn and has never shown up. If he never does, it'll be over 4 months before he can be expelled. You never know - he might just pop around but I think he was new and just left. I've already accepted that it's going to sit in my list for a long time. I never have more than 5-6 games going so not a problem, just an annoyance. (EDIT: Actually, it's 21 days. I just realized it's 500 hours per turn, and theoretically should be able to expel after that time period. But... that's still a long time to wait.)

The unlimited comes in handy if you're playing with someone you know and trust, and you don't want to have to worry about it. I've used it to play live so that we can chat, and if we do happen to get interrupted it's not a problem and we just finish turn-based. And it's probably safe with a long-time member with a good record.

And no you can't give the red thumb. I wondered about that, but it is recorded as having left the game. I know the red thumbs are limited so maybe they don't want us wasting them on every person who quits a game, since that's still on their record, even if in a different format.

I have yet to finish a turn-based game where I didn't make the last move, and was able to give out green thumbs. Can people give green thumbs when it is several hours since the winning move has been made?

As said on the turn based update news message you should have 48 hours after a game end to give out a thumb :)

Hm, sorry I missed that. Thanks for the link. It was less than 48 hours, I wonder why I wasn't able to give thumbs. Well, I'll play a few more games before calling it a bug.

I'll highjack this thread because I don't feel like the question has been officially answered and I ran into a similar problem.
When a game is cancelled due to someone intentionally leaving, the system also disallows giving thumbs, because the game apparently "never happened" (which in this case isn't true, because we actually played).
The report-a-player-site says "The first player to quit a game in progress receives a leave penalty and an ELO penalty corresponding to a game loss. Thus, there is no need to report this player (although you should give the player a red thumb if he quits intentionally)." but that's not possible here.
