Sowing for the Harvest!

Post by vykintas »

As some of you already know, I'm working on the Harvest mini expansion and I have a couple of tangential points I'd like to discuss with the community.

This expansion comes with several setup changes for the game that are not directly related to the Harvest exp itself, namely:
- You draw one additional starter occ, choose one to keep and discard the other.
- For the short game each player gets 3 additional silver and draws 1 random weapon card.
- When playing with Norwegians - starting with the last player, each player chooses 1 artisan shed and builds it (so that's instead of drawing randomly and not having it built)
- When playing without Norwegians - each player draws 2 dark brown (non-starting) occs, chooses one to keep and may play it "for free" at the start of their first turn.

Would you guys like to see any of these implemented as custom options so you can use them without the Harvest (when it finally comes)? In the same vein, are there some other custom options you'd like to see for the game in general?

All of these variants are good. Bring more asymmetry and more opening variety.

Could there be a custom option to choose which island to play on in the game? On one hand, i think Mull Island is too OP. on the other hand, allowing players to customize each independently used island could enhance the game's playability.

I’m super excited to see Harvest on BGA. Looking forward to the alpha.

Just to clarify, you only get a pre-built shed in the short game, not the long game.

Also, the Harvest expansion designer, Gernot Kopke, confirms this in a later thread here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/323638 ... a-long-gam

Not so excited to try it out then. I think I accidently played the short game once...

Crazy suggestion: What if you could customize which side of the action boards you were playing, independent of the number of players?

Maybe it'd make the game too friendly in lower player counts (particularly with the 1-man two upgrades spot, but maybe also the 2-man hunting game and 4-man three double upgrades), but there's some fun stuff you can do at higher player counts (ex: trade sheep and silverware for big blue stuff, Birka Settler which requires 2-man Overseas Trading, whaling (or taking big island) to play a card instead of drawing a card, pillage twice in a round) that are usually not great (even at the higher player counts) but occasionally useful, and that you just can't do in a 2-player game because the relevant action spaces just don't exist.

Here is the reply from the designer https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/359002 ... ame/page/1.

There are so many wonderful suggestions! Can’t wait to test them on BGA.

Thank you for bring the mini2 to tests! I noticed one bug that the last player should be the first one to pick up the resources. However, in my two games, the second player chose the resource at first and then the first player. It is pretty painful for the last player. Hope to see it fixed soon!

Thank you again for your hard work!
