Scores and position in arena

Post by pantRrr »

Hi,

I think the score (and the difference between scores) should be used to win or lose rank when playing in Arena (or not, then it should be used for ELO points).
For example, when you lose the game 100 -103 against a top ten player, the tiny difference would mean something. Or when you win 122-88, the big difference means something as well!
It's not just winning or loosing...

Actually, it is only about winning or losing. If you’re behind, and your only chance to win is to try a « risky » strategy, that could bring a lot of points, then you should do it, instead of minimizing your score difference but still lose. Same if you’re ahead, you want to make sure your opponent can’t overtake you, even if that means sacrificing a few points. It’s hard to do in practice, but that is for example a strategy followed by AlphaGo when beating the best players in the world: instead of scoring as many points as possible, the computer maximises the probability of winning, even if it’s by 1 or 2 points. So, no, point difference should not be taken into account, only win/loss.
