While I agree that a little dialogue is nice, and basic salutations are not too a lot to ask, people play in widely different ways.

Sometimes chat isn't so visible and can be missed on some devices. Then you have the folks that play like 30+ turn based games at any one time, whereby their investment in a given game isn't sufficient to permit dialogue.

I don't know what the age limits are, but it's also possible that there are children playing on the platform who are instructed to not take part in any chat.

Overall, treat chat interaction as a bonus, and if it doesn't happen, understand that there may be a good reason.

Dunno what to tell you... I do. Maybe you are playing with non English speakers who are less likely to respond.

People may not always see the greeting. It's certainly happened to me that I only saw chat messages later on, especially in asynchronous games when I cycle through tables where I need to make a move.

I used to always greet, then stopped when I noticed the behaviour you are describing. Anyways I didn't take it as unpoliteness, just as Oxmeister said, many don't interact with chat due to technical reasons (I can confirm on mobile it's very uncomfortable). Now my only interaction with chat when playing strangers is "gg" if I lose. I used to always say gg, but I received multiple sarcastic replies by sore losers and read here on the forum that someone takes it as offensive... I dunno what's wrong with people, but just to be on the safe side I stopped doing so

I’ve taken to using the pop-up options when you click on the meeple icon in the chat window… I understand these items get presented in the user’s native language so that seems a bit friendlier to me… anyway, two of the options are “Thanks for the game!” and “Good game!” I use the former when I win and the latter when I lose. I have yet to have anybody complain.

I mostly play on mobile or tablet and on both the chat is a pain. And that's if I even notice there's a message, mostly I just miss it.
