Suggestion for the tutorial (to avoid negative experience)...

Post by Origami_Gourami »

Hello,

I watched the tutorial for this game, and once I'd got the principle of it, I followed its cheery direction to get stuck in and start having fun.

I had no idea about conventions, and was happily giving clues I thought were ok in a three player game, but we lost, and so I put a chirpy 'oh dear!' in the chat, only to receive some miserable comments in return (which at first I thought were directed at the other player, but no - they were for me to cherish!). I was told I gave the worst clues ever, and that I did not think; charming.

Now that I know there are complex conventions, I'll try and follow them, but to be honest, I'll probably just avoid the game altogether. It is the first and only negative experience I've had on BGA; it's always been fun and light, so this caught me off guard.

I went on to have a nice game with some lovely chilled folk afterwards, but it still feels soured.

Perhaps the tutorial should mention that there are (somewhat complex!) conventions at play, or maybe a setting for newbies to learn without risking other folk being snippy with them!

One big thing to help against that is to play 2P exclusively (most complex/random conventions don‘t work there).

There is still plenty of aggressive ppl, but you eventually can get rid of them by redthumbing consequently.

Thanks! That's a good plan.

I've played Hanabi a couple of times in person, but this is very different!

I didn't know about the red-thumbing thing; I'm still fairly new to BGA, and as I say, it's been overwhelmingly positive so far. Does this stop you matching with them, or does it count against them in some way? Sorry for newbie questions!

It can be the first only, or both, depending on whether you give them a private or public red thumb. You‘ll see that choice in the process.

The final part of the tutorial advises taking a look at the game summary on the game's page, to get more information about the conventions.

Anyway, I’m glad you met some nice people to play with before giving up because of the unpleasant ones. 🙂

Thanks Blacktango,

I must've missed that (I did the click walkthrough, not the video), and certainly didn't anticipate how snippy it would get! I guess I've just had such a positive experience of everyone helping each other enjoy and learn, it pulled me up a bit sharp. But yes, the nice folk won out in the end. Will brave a two-player... :D
