Leaver penalties and leaving/being skipped question

Post by Warpspider »

I was recently playing a game of Terraforming Mars in a tournament with 2 other players. In this game I ran out of time and so did another player at the table. At some point my turn was being skipped and I'm not contesting that.
What puzzles me is that once the game was considered over, the other two players (one timed out and one not) both shared a win while I received no points. I was under the impression that you could leave a game once your turns are being skipped with no penalty?

If you were not the first person to leave or have turns skipped, you can then leave without penalty.

But, this gas been a bit flaky recently.

Looking at the gam result, you were the one who was expelled, which means you get the penalty.

If this occurred during the system-wide outage yesterday, customer support will remove any penalties after you contact them.

Right. Once your turns are being skipped, you're already declared a loser and have a penalty. You can leave now with no further penalty :D

Usually I appreciate your humor, but this snark is directed at someone who clearly misunderstood something they read at some point when *someone else* got expelled and thought it applies to everyone (including the person who was expelled). Making fun of their confusion is a little offsides.

Just to be clear: the penalty was because you were expelled (and your turn skipped), NOT because you left the game after. And it doesn't matter if there was any other player with negative time too: if you were expelled, you take the penalty and all other players are considered winners, regardless of what you do after (except for possible bugs, see other threads).

What Jellby said is correct, furthermore (someone correct me if I am wrong):

If one of the other players is also negative on clock, that player cannot expel you for being negative. (I think?)

If 2 players are negative and one is positive, I am not sure what happens. Can a positive clock player choose to expel one player and not another? That would seem wrong to me, but I've never been in that situation.

In the game in question, I see a clock icon on one of your opponents. But that opponent might have gone briefly negative and then gotten back into positive, and thus not been subject to being expelled. That icon just means the player went into the red at some point in the game.

I think they can. But maybe not, I'm not sure there.

This one I'm sure, unless they have changed it recently. You can only expel one player, and only the player whose turn it currently is. See https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=67333
Well... it may be different in games with simultaneous turns, if two or more players are out of time while it's their turn. But in games with non-simultaneous turns (the majority) it's only one player.
In the game in question, I see a clock icon on one of your opponents.
If you go to the replay, before you choose player, at the bottom there's a graph. Two players are in the negative at the end:

Warpspider is out of time, so xxxx skips his/her turn
Warpspider has quit the game and is going to lose this game whatever happens.
Warpspider is zombie, action is skipped
xxxx quit the game after someone else quit the game (= no penalties).
xxxx is zombie, action is skipped
All players (with a positive clock) chose to abandon this game.

I dislike being able to kick one player while another is out of time. If multiple players are out of time, they should all be kicked.

I hope one player out of time cannot kick another player out of time, but I have never seen this situation, since I myself have only run out of time once or twice. I mean, by more than a few seconds.

The player being kicked isn't just kicked on BGA for being out of time, but for being out of time yet still holding the game up with their ongoing turn, preventing anyone else from playing.

A player that is out of time (even by a lot) can skip another player that is out of time (even by a little). This particular situation is addressed by https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=80997

Another possibility is that only the person with the most negative time can be skipped. This is addressed by
https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=165477.
