Conceding before 50%

Post by OmfgMyNameWontFi »

I come from chess where conceding is not just tolerated, its encouraged. Forcing a player to play out a clearly winning endgame is considered bad manners. I like the middle ground chosen by bga of being allowed to concede only after 50% but for games like ark nova, that 50% only happens 2-3 turns before the game ends which makes conceding almost pointless at that point.

I think calculating a more accurate 50% around 30 points instead of 50 points would be best. Or maybe just a hard 15 turns. Thoughts?

I love the idea of being able to concede after 15 turns

First of all, this should probably be in the general forum.

Second: the hard cap of 50% is set up so its easily deployable among all games and to prevent elo-farming.

Well, 50% is a global setting and should probably remain.
The question however is how it's determined for each game what the 50% point is and how its calcullated.
In games with rounds it usually easier to determine the half way point, even tho later round can be longer or shorter.
In other games it looks at the score, and it seems Ark Nova also does this, but as OP said, large point turns are had later in the game so 50% is more like 80% timewise.

Changing the count for % to turns would be good, but might be tricky.
Cause if we say 15 turns is 50%, what happens when a game goes over 30 turns?
It might lead to trouble.

The 50% is measures in score. I believe its the point when a player hits a combinated conservation/appeal score is 50 or more. It could be a bit less as players start with a negative score in Ark Nova.

Starting with negative points means the 50% would be higher than 50 points

This topic has literally nothing related to Ark Nova...

That's not correct. For every single game progression is calculated separately and developer(s) do that in the code. Sometimes it's the amount of rounds, sometimes VP, sometimes something completely different.

Not so concerned about when people can concede a game. I prefer to address the circumstances of conceding. I enjoy winning, but I don't play games on BGA for the soul purpose of winning. I play for the enjoyment of being challenged and seeing a strategy played out. I recently played a game where the other person conceded about halfway through, with absolutely no warning. The game was ended, and the amount of time I had to play another game was not sufficient. It was disappointing not to be able to finish a strategy I was testing out and to be left with too little time to play another game before my next engagement. I would prefer some communication in regards to these things; if someone is suddenly short on time, I am more than happy to change over to turn-based. Communicating with one's opponent seems more respectful than throwing in the towel.
