Otomo expansion

Post by Pikrass »

I am pleased to announce that the Otomo expansion is now available to play as an alpha variant!

This expansion contains 19 new cards: 2 for the first half, 2 for the second half, 8 new signings, 4 new motivation cards, and replacement cards for Nankatsu Fans, Toho Fans and Genzo Wakabayashi.

This version only adds the new cards to the base game. There is currently no plan to bring the solo mode, the 2v2 mode or the dice cards to Board Game Arena. Check out the physical game for those!
The cards are currently only available in English and Spanish. German speaking players will be shown the English version.

The plan is to move the expansion quickly to beta and then to a proper release, so please try to test it as extensively as you can!

Note that the update touched on a lot of core mechanics, which could bring bugs to the base game too. Please report any bug you can find to the tracker.

A few clarifications:
  • Tetsuo Ishida (can be played over the limit): to play this card over the play field limit, you have to be the person playing when the limit is reached. You can then buy it from the bench or play it from your hand. If the opponent reaches the limit, you will not be given the opportunity to play the card.
  • Tetsuo Ishida can currently not be played using Confrontation or Masao Nakayama (play a card from your deck). This is a known issue that should be fixed before beta.
  • Mitsuru Sano (reduce the limit): this is an optional ability that you have to enable (if you so choose). You can only do so if there's enough room on the field.
  • Makoto Soda (roll a die to get a die modifier token): you can use reroll abilities on this die roll, but if you do, they'll be considered used for the shoot phase at the end of the round
  • Halves still last the same amount of rounds, meaning three cards will be discarded from each before the game instead of one

The latest version introduces a rule change: only four signing cards are revealed at any given time. To see what the 5th and 6th cards are, you need to buy the existing cards.

There's another change coming concerning fans. They were not intended as a drop-in replacement for the base game card, but rather as a "handicap" mechanism. The idea is that if you're playing at home, your fans are stronger than the opponent's (you get the Otomo version while your opponent gets the base game version). It's not yet decided how that will be implemented in practice, so stay tuned.

The expansion is now in beta. Thank you everyone for testing it!
The goal is to officially release it soon as long as no bug is found.

Is the plan to release as Arena? I believe that once arena is updated with the expansion many more players will join again. Right now we are at 170-180 games Vs previous 360-380 simultaneously.

Thanks for the adaptation!

Arena settings are chosen by the gurus, not by the developers nor by BGA admins.

I see Fans has been reverted to original version, any plans to perhaps upgrade it to at least 1-2-1? I think fans could boost defenders moral as well and it would bring a bit more of value not only attacking but defending as well. While the expansion stats were too overpowered the fact that you could add fatigue when defending was fun.
