Distance travelled before being eliminated

We both crashed after the last corner, but wasn't my distance bigger than his?

It seems to me that the positions that counts are the ones before the rolls that caused the eliminations.

Otherwise, in the situation that I see my opponent be eliminated just ahead of me, I could just increase my gear and go for certain death, instead of trying to clean the corners, since going 6th gear would allow me to pass the point where my opponet exploded, and therefore winning without playing the corners properly.

I believe that's the reason for the rule of having to play 3 extra rounds even if you are the last car on track. To be sure you won't go recklessly fast just to get some positions before exploding yourself.

In a game 5 of us ran lately, we had both of us getting wiped out.

He led longer and died at a higher position, but his car crashed out before the end of the first lap. I died in the middle of the pack (probably didn't get any more than 4th position) but I crashed out on 3rd lap.

The game rewarded my friend and he got a higher (DNF) position compared to mine.

We both thought that was perhaps non-obvious why that would be the way it would come out that way. It seemed to both of us that whoever got more laps before crashing out (or if on the same lap, whoever got further) should be the result.

Thoughts? Is there a logic to what we saw and if so, what is it that way?

Did your race have qualification? If yes, qualifying acts as a tie-breaker for players that DNFed. Rules state: "In this adaptation, points are awarded for race completion and for Qualifying (if enabled). The Qualifying points are minor by comparison and serve as a tie-break if two players are both eliminated and score 0 in the race."
