I request an option to give all players the SAME BOARD.

Post by pmiller »

Just finished a session where we played 7-wonders-dice a bunch of times. It was new to most of us and it definitely grew on us. We all liked it and we worked together to discern beginning and mid-game strategies.
Like all games the randomness of the board setups combined with dice rolls means luck is involved but its generally balanced nicely. BUT...

**This is a game were it would be possible to have an easy-to-implement option to generate JUST ONE board setup an give that to ALL PLAYERS.**

This option would show how different decisions on how to use the SHARED die rolls can play out completely fairly on identical boards. We all thought that would lead to some very interesting games and help assess various strategies. And most skilled players would likely shift strategies a bit based on the common board variation.

This would lead to so many draws between players mirroring each turn. Especially on the top

I also think it's a terrible idea. You obviously don't like asymmetrical games and how their balance (and imbalance) can be managed. But please don't advocate for eliminating it in such games : slight and subtle asymmetry is in the DNA of the 7 wonders collection. Nothing would be more boring and void as a 7 wonders type of game with all players having the same options from the start.

There are many strategy game designs that work with symmetry because they are made for it and create differentiation over the course of the game by forcing players to create imbalanced positions. Main examples of course : chess and go. I don't know many more well enough because I actively avoid them nowadays. But if they're your thing, just play them. And if you really want to theory craft a certain wonder, easy : do this at home with several sheets of paper. You'll maybe discover things. But honestly not much more than by playing the actual game.

Why are people so negative about this suggestion? You could just not play with the symmetrical boards if you don't want to play with the same boards. The person is just asking for the option, and I think it's a great idea.

I can't disagree more.
Any bad idea should be unavailable, even as an option. It ruins the tables where people chose it.

For instance, I'm strongly annoyed with the fact that you can setup "random sides" in regular 7 wonders tables. Such a bad option in that particular game.

Besides, the idea mentionned here is just not compatible with the IRL box and the official ruleset. I don't even think it's possible for BGA to accept to implement it because of that. Which makes it pointless to discuss honestly. Like I said already : do it in real life with paper if you like. Heck : just design a similar game that fits this idea ! This one just doesn't.
