Karma is Extremely unbalanced

Post by GoCougs83 »

I understand the need for karma and quick play, but to lose 20% because you ran out of time and then need to play 10 perfect games to get it back is crazy and unfair

Some people should also be more considerate if you are actively playing and clearly not intentionally stalling.

Also, to remove the chat feature just because you are below 50% doesn't make sense either. Then you can't apologize for your slower play.

It should either be less of a penalty or gained easier.

My two cents.

Maybe you should try some turn-based games if you're having trouble keeping up in real-time mode? You should be aware of the clock.

You lose 10 for running out of time. You lose 20 for doing it again in short order. And even at that point, NOTHING on your account is restricted (except maybe those who run really strict karma filters).

I would expect that it's supposed to be punitive - ie. a disincentive to keep doing it. But I tend to agree that chat bans should be for misusing chat, not for running out of time in games.

There has been a lot of chat that real-time play is currently less stable because the site is less stable. Which is unfortunate. But it doesn't entirely sound like that's your issue and generally, as FSKFSK says, choose a speed you can meet. It is nice when your opponent gives you leeway (and I say this as someone who generally does, even in turn-based play), but they're not required to. You know the deal going in.

I usually won't kick someone for time as long as they're still playing and putting in an effort. There are some people who let their clock go down to 0:00 on every move, and I tend to not be generous with them.

When I notice I'm out of time, I hurry to make a legal move rather than keep thinking. I only have this problem when I'm new to a game.

I have had the site crash on me recently, where it said it was my opponent's turn and it actually was my turn. I had to refresh to see it was actually my turn.

Since when was not running out of a time a perfect game? Playing a game within the agreed upon time is just the norm. There's nothing special about it. Having to play 10 regular games to fix an abnormal game is laughably easy.

Not even that. You don't lose anything for running out of time, except the potential 1% karma gain for completion, which usually doesn't mean much since 100% is the norm anyways. So you can even run out of time as much as you want with no damage to your reputation. To lose karma you have to actually get kicked.

the chat penalty indeed is ridiculous for karma loss from slow play. imo it should be something like this:

* if you drop below 50% by quitting / being skipped
--> lose ability to host/join any fast paced games

* if you drop below 50% by a chat moderation
--> lose ability to use chat

...not sure which kind of other misdeeds might be relevant
Check out the Allround-League: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=7870115 --> a league where you have matches of random games vs. other players in your group. Season 9 registration oct. '25.

Why are there so many posts / bug reports from people complaining about being punished for failing to make their moves in the allotted time?

Pay attention to the clock and move within the allowed time.

A chat penalty loss from low reputation seems odd to me. Is that really how it works?

The thing about your solution is that a player only drops below 50% due to the game right before that happened, so it would basically be determined by only that game, which gets a bit odd if the previous reputation loss was for completely different things. I prefer having the chat moderation be a manually applied thing to be applied at moderator discretion rather than automatic implementation. Or if it had to be automatic, have the penalty be applied based on the accumulation of chat moderation, such as a certain percentage lost to it or how many times it had previously been applied.

True, though since the OP was complaining about losing 20%, I assume they've run out of time at least twice AND been kicked for it. From their POV, all they did was "run out of time" and their opponent wasn't "nice enough" to let them.
