Did they pick them in the same turn ? Because you don't get a privilege if an opponent picks both pearls in seperate turns, only in the same turn

Note that you only gain a privilege if your opponent picks 2 Pearls with a single action. If they use a Privilege to take a pearl and then with their regular action, take the other pearl, that doesn't trigger the penalty of giving you a privilege.
