Polis: fight for the hegemony - suggestions! :)

Post by JohnFly »

Hello,

first of all, i will say thanks you for this beautiful game. I realy like it! Its so fun to have opportunity to play it in Internet.
I have played some games and I have some suggestions, maybe can improve the gaming for this game.

- I haved some troubles with the battle card Sphalinx Call -1... two times when I played it, it dont release me one prestige point, i dont know why.
- It will be interessting to see the battle card just in right of the board map... with a button who can press for the next turn battle. In that way, we can say the result to see if everything its ok. Its also good for beginner who wants to learn.
- Another important suggestion, we cannont cancel order of movement (cube units and proxenos)... sometime we take action and we forgot somethings and we want to cancel this action, but we cannot for movement. its will be good also for beginner for learning and also because sometime we make some errors.
- About Event, three time we haved the event "No event" in round 4, 5a, 5b... maybe a condition, if we have a one "No event" its not possible to have a second "No event".

Thanks you for your big work, I very appreciated! I hope you can be improve this game.

* Sorry for my english, I'm not very good, but i'm practise.

Hello.

Yesterday i played my first real time game here and it was a quite nice experience.

However, there are two things i propose to improve and change:

1) a board is cluttered with cubes in some areas. Especially Megaris, Attika etc. Sometimes i was not sure whether the cubes of an opponent were hoplites or galleys. Once or twice it caused me to make wrong assumption and influenced my moves. Later i was fine with it and able to see what is what, but recognizing it demands some experience at the board. A simple sign on the top of each cube would make it much clearer (for instance H for hoplites, G for galleys).

2) One serious flaw i found is that discs of poleis which turn back to neutrality are not being removed from the board. It caused funny situation when i moved oi polloi hoplites to Boiotia to collect goods and it was for nothing since Thebai were not my allies anymore (but my disc was still placed on them). I know that a player can scroll down half a screen and see another board showing allied poleis, but i did it only occasionally. I thought that everything is on the main board.

As to what JohnFly said, in my game there was plenty of events so it is just a matter of (bad) luck.

Especially in Turn-based mode, battles tend to take a long time (unless both players are online at the same time).

To speed things up, the decision whether to retreat could be combined with the following moves, in the following manner:

Player A: Attack 'conditionally' (cards not revealed to Player B yet, attack will not be carried out if Player B retreats)
Player B: Decide whether to retreat, then (reveal attacking cards and) defend, then attack 'conditionally' (as above)
Player A: Decide whether to retreat, then (reveal attacking cards and) defend, then attack 'conditionally' (as above)
and so on.

This way, there is much less switching between the players, compared to the way it's now done:

Player B: Decide whether to retreat
Player A: Attack
Player B: Defend
Player A: Decide whether to retreat
Player B: Attack
Player A: Defend
Player B: Decide whether to retreat
Player A: Attack
and so on.

The suggested optimized interaction does not change the information that is available to any player at any point in the game.
