Difference between registered and joined

I have a tournament that has me as registered but everyone else listed in joined.
What is the difference?
Can people join if they are not invited? I invited some people but am assuming it is still open to all

One of categories is for people who joined from an invite. The other is for people who found the tournament on their own. I can't remember which is which, but the ones on top were invited and the ones on the bottom registered directly without an invite. Once the tournament starts they all show as "Registered Participants" without distinguishing between the two groups.

As long as you didn't set it to private, someone can join without an invite (assuming they meet the Elo and reputation restrictions).
