Possible Proposal: Arena Should Only Be For 500+ ELO

Post by Archisian »

It's the same people every time at the time and opponents aren't separated by league. A player in the bronze league will often face the best players in the world, and inevitably get crushed and have their ELO and win-rate tank. The way Arena is set up too is that no one can drop a league once they reach a certain tier. So you could have players who are not good (like myself) be in the "Elite League". What does that say when someone with a horrendous ELO like myself is in the same tier as someone like Ryse96 or JohannesTheGreatest?

I think really only the best players in the world should be in the "Elite League" battling for champion. Top 100 or 200 or something. Any more than that just dilutes the field and gives the top players easy victories to stay afloat.

Tl;dr: Badly skilled players shouldn't be able to participate in Arena. All it does is, at best, put them in a tier they don't deserve to be in, and a guarantee to add more losses and ELO depreciation.

Why eliminate arena for some players who might enjoy it just because some others might not?

Arena participation is voluntary. Anyone who dislikes getting matched against higher rated players can play non-arena games and use the standard Elo filters.

Your game history is really weird. Your ELO appears to be 180 ish at the moment, but it's been over 300 and you've conceeded a lot of ordinary/non-arena games in the last couple of days. I honestly have no idea what's going on.

You can create a tournament for 500+ elo players.

The stated goal of Arena is "Challenge other players to win Arena points in each game, be promoted to higher leagues, and try to become the World Champion!"

The way Arena is currently designed is the same if it was already restricted to just the top players in the world. So, someone who worked their way up and think they might be a decent player will get absolutely crushed in Arena. Subsequently, top players who want to have an actual challenge will often face players who are just bad at the game. Yeah, they get an easy win and feel good about it for the moment. but if the goal is to be the World Champion, it would behoove them to face better skilled competition to get there.

As FrankJones said, I concede games that I know are lost causes. Since you looked at my history, most of the games I said screw it to were when my opponents dropped a Crow early or got the opportunity to draw it from the tray. If someone gets a Crow, the game's over. Unless they are a bad player who can't use them properly (like me).

Also, 300 ELO is still just a beginner level. Even though I worked my tail off to try and get better at the game and thought I achieved something with getting 394-395 ELO (my highest), it's still not good.

The game is definitely not over if your opponent lands an early crow. I've been on both sides of that — you gotta contest the game and see what happens. A strong-looking start can fizzle for reasons, and your opponent may play their hand optimally or they may not.

I don't think ELO means a whole lot to begin with, but as you say, even a 400 player can't be expected to play a strong hand perfectly. If you know the game well, and it sure seems like you do, you might get better results on balance than you are expecting by simply making them try.

If I'm going against Rye96 and they play an early Crow, what do you think the odds are that I'm going to lose?

You don’t know unless you try, right? And you aren’t playing 600 ELO players in every game surely. I mean it’s up to you what kinds of games you choose to play or concede, just pointing out you could be leaving ELO on the table (if you care about that) as well as the practice of battling out tough situations and executing optimal endgames (which can sharpen the skills necessary for close fights).
