Proposal for preventing abuse of forfeit option

Forfeiting seems like it's abused more than genuinely used.

Not allowing single point forfeits before bearing off would no longer make abuse possible

Vote for my suggestion if you agree

I voted against your suggestion because I disagree.

Would you mind elaborating why you disagree?

Best option would be to allow only one forfeit offer per move. A player could be still a little bit annoying by offering each move but they could not stall indefinitely. The game would always advance.

Killing the option entirely is too much in my opinion - but would be better than the current state.

That still leaves the other half of the problem. Many players just click it every time they're gonna lose. Even when it's clear a gammon is all but guaranteed. Just in case the other player is either inexperienced or distracted enough to click yes by accident.

That's still abuse of the function, without any spam being involved.

The vast majority of 1p forfeits tried before bearing off on bga are positions where it it's very bad for the opponent to accept.

The very few cases where it should be accepted. It only takes a few rolls to bear off the first pawn anyways. And that's a situation that won't occur on most tables. So even for legitimate uses. This chaonly cost a handful of rolls, on a minority of tables.

I disagree. I sometimes offer forfeit if it's clear I'm going to lose. The fun part is over it's just tedium from there. If the opponent wants to try for a gammon so be it. What makes that a bug?

I used to agree with you; but at the end of the day; we don't need to play to the 'bitter end' when it's going to be a loss anyway. The ELO points all work out the same way whether you 'forfeited' or 'lost'.

I have refused a forfeit before because I was hoping I'd get a gammon. I put that in the chat! Communication goes a long way.
"Not accepting your forfeit, I'm trying for a gammon".

Then if they forfeit (concede a gammon), I win it anyway.

You don't have to Play anything to the bitter end.

Per my proposal you can forfeit as soon as you get your first stone out of the board.

Because my intention seems to be a unclear for some people.

Firstly you can still forfeit gammons and backgammons if you simply want to continue and end the game early.

And, as soon as you've taken your first pawn off the board, and gammon is impossible. You can still forfeit a single point to end early.

If you're not yet home, but it's clear the opponent will win. They can still double to end early. If the cube is not available to them. It will at worst, take you a handful of turns to get home and bear off 1 pawn to make the forfeit available.

In the cases where you'll likely take 5 or more turns before you can use the forfeit. That's a large enough difference that your opponent should never accept your single point forfeit anyways.

This change won't stop you from using the forfeit option. And it will never force you to play out long games for nothing. At worst it might have you waiting 2-3 turns extra, once every five games or so. That's not a big sacrifice to prevent abuse and promote fair play.
