There’s a stat called “Flocks not completed by choice.” The stat refers to when you have the option of sending home a flock as the last action in a turn and you choose not to, keeping the set of birds in your hand instead.
Do yourself a favor and check out this stat on your player profile of Cubirds. THEN check out the same stat of the player(s) at the top of the leaderboards. The difference should be fairly wide.
I believe this one choice (which happens multiple times in a game) could support hundreds of players leveling up.
I personally hold back a lot of sets. My stat is 1.89. I thought that was pretty high, but SmileMore (#1 in Arena) is basically double that!!
Cubirds is a game of disclosed and undisclosed information. As soon as you send a set home, you are disclosing a number of things: 1) you’re out of that bird, 2) how many cards you have left (admittedly, some of these are sets too…), and 3) toward the end of the game, which birds you need to focus on to win. Holding back a set for 1-2 turns deprives your opponent of that information.
Holding back a small set (2 flamingoes, 3 owls, 3 toucans) will give you an additional opportunity to pick up an additional card, so you can send home a large set. So many opponents send home a small set early, depriving themselves of a large set and generally a larger advantage.
Holding back a set also obscures when you intend to end the round. Your hand looks huge because you’re holding a set of warblers, and your opponent thinks they have time to draw two more cards. This tiny bit of information can help you get ahead in a round and perhaps take the game.
Cubirds community, it’s time to level up! There are tons of little decisions that help a player win, but this one is the biggest. I just played someone whose average withheld sets stat was 0.19. That means I hold back 10 times more that this player, and SmileMore holds back almost 20 times more!!
