Adding context for translations

Post by houseofsuns »

I took a closer look at how translations work and there is the possibility to add context to a string resource (especially useful for short strings like "free"). However I could not find out how I as a developer can add this context. Is this done in the code or in the translation web interface and how? I did not find an answer in the wiki or the forums.

As a translator, I very much appreciate your effort!

I found this information: "When translators are going to translate your game, the most difficult task for them is to get the context of the string to be translated. The shorter the string is, the more difficult the task is for them. As a rule of thumb, try to avoid short, insignificant strings that require knowledge of their surrounding context. You can also leave a comment on the context of the string in the translation program (English to English) if you are the developer of the game." (Source: https://en.doc.boardgamearena.com/Translations)
I hope this helps!

Language is a source of misunderstanding. (Antoine de Saint-Exupery: The Little Prince) But it is also the source of understanding - it all depends on how you use it. :-)

For what I know, contexts are currently automatically generated based on the name of the file where the string has been marked for translation. Here's a related suggestion that could improve context providing: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=237146

I tried this, but I failed. Meaning I didn't see an input for adding context. Maybe I have to use some special developer link?
However if it is indeed derived from source file then this is moot.
