Gaining points in Elite arena

Post by MattiaDixon »

Hi everyone, I noticed that in elite rank you gain or lose points based on the ELO of the opponent, rather than their arena ranking, isn't it a little unfair? I have around 300 ELO at the moment and winning against a player who has around 100 gives me 6 points, while losing makes me drop of around 30. Shouldn't the game give and take points based on your arena rank instead of ELO? Otherwise it would be better for me to play some non arena games, drop to 100 ELO and then rank again, so I can gain way more points than now.
Am I the only having a "problem" with this?

You noticed wrong, or something has changed recently, or there is a bug.

You win or lose elo points based on your elo and your opponent's.
You win or lose Arena points based on your Arena score and your opponent's.

If you observed something different, please provide a link.

You get two adjustments when playing arena, one used for your arena rank, and the regular Elo adjustment.

You have an arena ranking (EAS) that is reset to 1500 every season. It remains hidden until you reach elite, but it is still being calculated up until that point. Once you reach elite it continues to be used. You see higher variations than you may expect because the K-factor for EAS is higher than the K-factor for established Elo ratings.

As other have said, you have noticed incorrectly.

This would be false. The regular rating you gain/lose is based on each player's regular rating. The Arena score is affected by each player's Arena score. So your 300 regular rating, gaining 6 points for a win sounds like you beat a lower rated opponent. That said, your claim about losing 30 rating is nonsense, that doesn't exist. Regular rating's k factor is at 20 for accounts that got through their initial games. If you got 6 for beating them, you should have lost 14 for losing to them. Whatever you win for victory and whatever you lose for defeat should add up to 20 points. A 300 vs a 100 is high risk low reward for the 300 in order to cancel out the good odds they have.
https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=915075001 https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=914889361 https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=908803632 As we can see, your +6s are vs low 200s at your current mid to higher 300s rating. The baseline for an even game is 10 points for winning and 10 points for losing, which you'd find in your games as a 300s vs close enough 300s.

https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=908057055 As expected, when losing to such a 200, you lost 14 points.

As expected, no sign of these -30s you speak of, not for the regular rating examples you were using. https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=916067820 https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=915605815 Sure, in games like this you may have dropped over 30 Arena points, but that's Arena rating, not regular rating. Arena rating operates on a k factor of 40 for regular games if memory serves, not to mention the higher starting values. So that tends to lead to bigger numerical changes. In regular rating you lost 16 points. Which seems reasonable considering you lost as a 300s vs a 100s.

If you wreck your regular rating to 100 in non-Arena games, it won't help your Arena score at all. When you reenter Arena you'll still gain/lose the same Arena points as before; however, your regular rating will go up much easier because you'd be underrated. This will continue until you reach your proper rating, and you'll more or less be back where you left off in regular rating, assuming your game skills didn't change much over that period of time.

All accurate except this part. The Elo formula only considers the difference between the players' ratings, not their magnitude, so the higher starting values of EAS have no bearing on the size of the rating adjustment. In other words, a person rated 270 Elo beating a person rated 240 Elo would have the same adjustment as someone 1610 EAS beating someone 1580, assuming the same K-factor being applied for both. As you noted (and I noted), EAS applies a higher K-factor than one used for an established Elo rating (after the first 20 games), but that difference has nothing to do with EAS starting at 1500.

Yeah, that wasn't worth the credit I gave it, my bad. Players can drop below 1500, much more than the minimums for the 100 elo and starting at 0 regular elo allows, but that's probably not usually a heavy hitter.

Right. For all the complaints about Arena, I would say the Arena scoring makes a lot more sense compared to Elo.

Arena:
1) No artificial floor of 0.
2) No situation in which you are above a floor but still do not lose Elo (The way an apprentice can gain but not lose Elo when between 1 and 100 Elo).
3) No secondary floor the way Elo has a secondary floor at 100, which you cannot fall below once you reach it.
4) No "consecutive wins" penalty in Arena points (At least, I don't think there is.)

In Arena, you start at 1500, and you gain or lose exactly the number of arena points indicated by the formula, which also has a standard k-factor (40) for all players, unlike Elo which can be 20, 40, or 60 depending on the number of games a player has already completed.
