warnings, slack towards newbies and no competition games

Hi,

(Repost as the former one may have been the wrong thread)

As a noob I have 4 suggestions:

1) Would be nice if players are warned with a sound that their time is about to run out
2) If for whatever reason the timer does run out: please allow that person to continue playing even if he does not get any "competition" points.
We tend to forget that not only the ones who sit a game out but also the ones who time out have invested the same amount of time in a game.
I for one was very upset that I could not even finish a game because I was 7 seconds out of time.... People... I don't care about a Metacompetition. Just want to play that one game.
3) As a condemned Noob, I now have a penalty and a red thumb and I essentially can't play many games because, well... a 10% threshold is not that much with only 3 games under your belt.
Maybe it's a good idea to delay the penalizing to a situation where players have played more than x games. You know: not everyone immediately understands the workings of a new system.
4) Please allow for a game to be played without all the fuss: as an organiser of a play: allow me to do away with anything that has nothing to do with the game: timers, marking winners, metascoring, negative and positive thumbs etc. As an organiser it would be nice if I could control under which circumstances I want to play.

Good gaming.

Hi and welcome to this site.

Most of the stuff that you want is already there:

If you run out of time you are not automatically expelled, that is between the players at the table and in my experience most players tend to wait for a lot longer than -00:07. Seems like you had some bad luck there but of course it also depends on the quality of the game up to that point, if it was a great game people tend to wait longer. But it's up to everyone who has to wait.

People also don't just look at the warning (has left the game in me than 10% of games) but rather give you another chance of they see it was just once. Same about the red thumbs. You will still be able to get games, no problem there. everyone knows the same could happen to them, have a bad connection once and/our run across someone who gives a (maybe unwarranted) red thumb.

If you set the table you can decide about the time limit (even have none at all), decide about metascoring (Elo on/off) . Thumbs can still be given, but most people on here are nice and won't give red for nothing, so you shouldn't worry about that too much.

About your suggestion with the sounds. Might be okay, even though in my opinion there are already too many sounds on here but at least that would be a sound one doesn't have to hear too often.

Thanks for the welcome.

It's nice to hear that I shouldn't overworry my concerns in regards to exits, thumbs-down and well... basically general punishment for what is supposed to be a FUN time to spend your precious free time :D

But... I don't have the experience nor the knowledge to explain in full detail what happened in my particular game, I can only relate to this one experience. What happened is I went over my time to think. This automatically triggered game ending conditions whereby everyone was a winner and I lost. Some metapoints were divided, that's all good and fine, but I could not re-enter, nor finish the game normally since all my turns were skipped. Did some (the game moderator) order this to happen? I don't know, but what I do know is that it just wasn't possible to finish the game anymore. I for one felt it was very stupid that we all couldn't just continue on, only because I had missed an arbitrary clock of some sorts.

It's nice to read I can do without a clock, however I seem to miss this option in a Live game of Tzolkin, which is where I was looking for one.

I Thought the Elo thing on/off seems to be the trick, but I noticed the first game I played still handed points to winners and deductions from losers. I'll look into what I did wrong there.

Thanks for the time in replying. Hope to catch you on a board someday.

Sheers,

Logan

Actually, what going over your time to think did was allow any other player (not just the table creator) at your table to skip your turns. Unfortunately for you, it looks like someone was impatient. On the other hand, unfortunately for them, their time was wasted by someone who didn't play at the speed they agreed to when the table was created (remember that pop-up window with the "I agree" button?) ....

Anyway, treat it as a learning experience, and move on. Most people I've dealt with don't care what your percentage is if your total is really low. 1 red thumb with 5 green thumbs doesn't matter, but 100 red with 500 green does.
