Why are people giving thumbs down when beaten!

Hi all,

I've never felt the need to post on here before but I just received a thumbs down from someone after a game - seemingly because they were annoyed I beat them.

I always give people a thumbs up unless (in very rare circumstances) they have said something offensive.

Perhaps I'm taking this too seriously but I like having the green thumbs...

What does everyone else think?

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The more people you play, the more likely you receive some red thumbs. As long as you have many more greens than reds, I don't think people will count it against you. Some people don't even care about your "reputation", but only care about their own evaluation.

I don't think the meaning of the thumbs is really clearly defined either. This poster doesn't want to give others red thumbs. Personally, I use it to mark someone I don't want to play with for whatever reason. That could mean:

- time outs/leaving
- rude behaviour
- not responsive/not paying attention
- consistent Internet reliability issues

Others may have their own reasons for giving thumbs.
I can imagine some people may give reds out of spite, but they will be in the minority. Just something you need to accept in life.

Maybe we should take a hint from BoardGameGeek and get rid of the thumbs-down and just keep the thumbs-up. No negative feedback. Or maybe only be able to thumb-down when a person times out a game. For rude behavior, reporting them should be enough.

There are already metrics for time-outs and leavers, so it would be somewhat redundant if red thumbs are only allowed for those cases.

I wouldn't mind losing the red thumbs. Another option would be simply not displaying them. This way, people can still use the game filters to avoid playing with those who consistently receive negative feedback, but those with a few red thumbs wouldn't have any negative feelings.

There should be a separate thumbs down that just you can see in order to accomplish this. I don't think you should give a thumbs down for everyone to see just because you yourself don't want to play with the person again. Agree?

I got a thumbs down today without even playing, i was a spectator in several games, didn't utter a word and for reasons that noone knows i got a thumbs down by somebody !!

I agree with Grasoga, I'd also like the thumbs down system to be a personal reminder of players I had a bad experience in play with, and a comment box or drop down list for details.
I prefer to evaluate somebody's reputation by myself than rely on others opinion, and keep it to myself. It just costs one game.
Rendering this public does more harm then good, as it can be unfair and sticks to your profile. After all, we are here to have fun, not to get public punishment.

Personally, I don't use public thumb records as a source of information - I give everyone a chance unless I've had problems with them myself.

However, I still think that public records are very important: not as a source of information, but as a deterrent. Players are careful not to be too obnoxious, because they don't want to receive lots of red thumbs. This has a significant positive influence on the atmosphere here.

Yes, some players will give out red thumbs for no reason, but these are the minority. You will get a red thumb from these people every now and then, but this is no big deal, because everyone knows those players exist, so no one cares if you have some red thumbs. It will only be a problem for you if you have lots of red thumbs, but this will only happen to those who deserve it.

sorry to necro this thread, but ...

i like the default now, where you get a thumbs up if none of the other players gives you a thumb down.

that said, i do like the suggestion that you get an indication of when YOU'VE given someone a thumbs down, perhaps with a date and the game played. that way, even if you didn't like someone's attitude in one type of game, they may still be ok to play with in a different type of game. but you can make sure to avoid them for the game that you've given them the thumbs down for.

maybe you should be able to see how many thumbs up and downs people give out. If someone gives out way too many thumbs down maybe they shouldn't count...or at least you know they a bad loser and to avoid.
