Better way to deal with skipped players in tournaments?

Post by esspea »

Is how a game resolves when a player is skipped after running out of time a BGA-wide thing or can it be customized at a game by game level?

Right now if a player runs out of time and someone chooses to skip, the current state of the game is not taken into account and the remaining players are all counted as winners. In group/swiss situations this means every one comes 3rd and gets the equivalent points which isn't great but isn't as bad as in knockout situations where when, for example playing with 6 people and only 3 move on, 2 people actually "lose" and are eliminated based on their account age.

I know it could still be exploited if the game was scored with the current placement on the board when the player was skipped, but it would be less than the current state which is basically if you are losing and one player has run out of time you can just skip their turn to get a much better score than you would have otherwise (or if your account is old you could even survive a knockout that you should have been removed from). I've seen a game where someone was finished the race and in first and one of the last players skipped the person out of turn and that first place player was eliminated because their account was young. Not cool!

Even better yet, the game is not broken if one player stops playing, so I'm hoping it is possible to just continue the game after the player has been skipped and use the final results (ensuring the skipped player is last regardless of where they were) to score it?

Any change would be great as the current state is not great for tournaments.

Current, extremely exploitable State: Game ends immediately and players either get the middle ground score or eliminated based on youngest account

Better but still exploitable State: Game ends immediately and players get scored or knocked out based on their current position (or current position a the start of the most recent turn)

Best state: Game does not end, player skipped is removed and remaining players play on to finish and get scored accurately based on where they placed.

Currently for large tournaments I using playing hours and give each player the max time, but even still there are players running out of time (but still playing). I have learned for my next tournament to do a group/swiss stage first to get rid of players that play to slow or aren't serious, as over the course of many games they will not get points and be eliminated, before moving to the knockout, but it makes the first round so tedious when you can't skip players and so you are on the hook for 30 days for one game in turn based modes.

It's a global bga thing, nothing we can do game side.

Yeah, it would be nice if the framework allowed custom behavior for that.

For heat, you could remove the car or replace it with a legend.
(Neither is ideal as it impacts adrenalin and legend cars are stronger in some sections of the circuit and weaker in others)

Too bad... what would the best tournament settings for Heat to minimize the impact of this then? Group stage early to weed out those not committed before the knockout so no one runs out of time in the later stages? Anything more that can be done? With playing hours and 2 days per player the games take 30 days and people still run out of time so not sure that I have any more flexibility there.

This really is a problem - it's ruining a good game.

How do we petition a change in the framework?

Report or upvote as "main website" instead of "a particular game".

I would second that: more freedom in the framework to handle how abandon and timeouts are handled by particular games for unrated games, rated games, arena and tournament.
The current handling would remain the default but particular games would be allowed to differ.

Not quite the same topic as not tournaments, but definitely more needs to be done to deal with tilt quitters in ranked races. Heat is the worst offender for this I've seen by a huge margin on BGA.

Like 1 in 4 races end with someone quitting for some reason, almost certainly tilt when they know they can't win towards the end/spin out, and I have my settings to very restrictive reputation wise, still there's an endless supply seemingly of people who want to ruin the game for everyone else, and it is ruining the game. It's very tedious to play 45 minutes get down to 1-2 moves left and someone times out and disappears not wanting to play anymore.

I realise it's almost certainly a wider BGA thing and you can't make punishments specific to Heat, but the punishments really need to be bigger for these players that if you do it more than once in a certain period you get banned, as it's killing the game right now. Is it not possible to change the way the ELO system works for Heat, so that if somebody tilt quits the other players can complete the race and still get full ELO. The issue with the whole 90% ELO points awarded, is when there's 4-5 winners in a race you have to have a low ranking to actually gain anything from it, and it's the people who don't quit games who lose out from it currently, as the games where someone quits by definition are far more likely to be games you were going to win.
