gg/good game - have I missunderstood this greeting?

Post by Dyers_Woad »

Hi.

I will preface this with: my first language is not english.

Since I started using BA not too long ago I've seen people say "gg"/"good game" after a game is over. This I assumed was a general greating, a little like "thanks for playing" or something.

I just finsihed a game of Wingspan and said this in chat while the points were being counted. One person seemed angry/offended/irritated at me for doing so since I was in the lead before the points were calculated (I did not win in the end). Saying it might not have been a good game for everyone, the people coming in 4th and 5th i.e. This I understand but gloating was not my intention. I just wanted to be friendly and say hi to everyone who had played and I thought "gg" was the way.

Have I completely missunderstood this greating? Thankful for help :)

Well, you can't please everyone, and you don't have to. GG might be rude to some people, but complaining about other people's greeting words is certainly rude to more people.

I just say gg after a game regardless I'm winning or losing, only say something else when I have to (e.g. "the implementation / that overpowered card has ruined this game"). Games are, by default, good, aren't they?

This have been my way too. I'm just happy I had the opportunity to play a game whether I lost, won or something els (and wanted to express that).
Then that comment from that player had me wondering if I'd missunderstood the expression based on language or cultural differences, since no one explicitly told me how to use it.

This topic comes of periodically. There are, broadly speaking, four camps of people:
1) those who view it as sportmanship, akin to shaking an opponent's hand after a sports event, win or lose.
2) those who don't want any kind of pleasantries at all during a game, including "gg," "good luck," and "have fun."
3) those who think gg should be reserved for situations that in their subjective opinion were good games even if they lost (and you have to read their mind to know if they feel this way this time); and
4) those who feel saying gg if they lost is rubbing their nose in the loss.

You will run into every one of these types of people. Red thumb the ones who react in a way you deem unpleasant. They will probably do the same to you.

I've taken to only saying gg if someone else initiates it because of types 3) and 4).

I will say that it is annoying when the winner does it before everyone has finished their last turn. Those other players may still be fighting for other places, and even though it probably isn't intended this way, saying gg before they are done is like saying "I'm done, I won, and your turn is irrelevant."

I have encountered this too and feel the same.
The earliest I've said it is when all the rounds/turns are over but the points are still being calculated, since some people disappear so quickly. But even this feels too early sometimes.

Thank you for laying out the situation and explaining everything.

I know you said broadly speaking, but while I fit emphatically into this camp, the bracketed sentiment does not apply to me - I offer gg if I think a game was well played, win or lose, I don't expect my opponent to do so (unless they also thought the same).

I also typically respond where it is given, assuming I see the message within 2 hours of being sent (as I personally find it somewhat annoying to get a message about a game that finished a while ago, and that I've probably all but forgotten about). Otherwise, I leave it.

I also agree that saying gg before the last move is taken (so when points are being calculated is fine) is annoying, especially when done by the winner. That said, even if you say it after people have "disappeared", I believe the chat still pops up for them (unless they have already closed it after the game is over - typically seen by a "xxxx has left the chat").

I see the chat regularly popping up again and again after I have closed it, whenever someone writes something else. I cannot say if it happens always, or just sometimes, or within some time period, but certainly closing the chat after the game is finished (and, I presume, having "xxxx has left the chat" shown in other players' windows), is no protection against further messages.

I could be wrong, but I've had the experience where my husband and I were in a game, I "left the chat", and he commented IRL to me about a message that came later from one of our opponents - that message didn't pop up for me. Most games you probably don't leave the chat, as nothing may be said outside of the game context (or maybe nothing even within the game context), so if someone puts a message in after the game ends, it pops up as an external chat on the main part of the site (not within other games, but when you come out of them). If you then close this, it seems to leave the chat. So I think that's why sometimes you get messages after the game has ended. As I say, this is anecdotal based on a few experiences I've had and I could be wrong, but that's why I thought what I thought.
